20% Order Cancellations in 6 Months Threaten 100 Factories in Bangladesh’s Garment Industry

Bangladesh’s garment industry is facing challenges, with nearly 20% of foreign orders canceled in the last six months. Worker unrest, particularly in Ashulia, a key area for garment factories, is the main reason behind this decline.

Industry associations like BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) and BKMEA (Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association) have warned that if the situation doesn’t improve, around 100 factories may close in the next six months. Many foreign buyers are now avoiding factories with labor issues, which is making it difficult for businesses to operate smoothly.

The garment sector is vital for Bangladesh, accounting for over 80% of the country’s export income. If this unrest continues, it could have serious implications for the national economy. Experts are urging both the government and industry leaders to take action and address workers’ concerns to restore buyer confidence.

The coming months are critical for the survival of the industry, and there is hope that the necessary steps will be taken to bring stability back to the sector.
