Friendly commercial activities are starting between Bangladesh and Pakistan. A ship carrying the first consignment of 26,250 tons of rice, imported from Pakistan under a government initiative, has arrived at Chattogram Port. The ship anchored at the port’s container terminal yesterday, Wednesday, at around 2 PM. If everything goes as planned, the unloading of rice will begin at night, according to Chattogram Port Secretary Md. Omar Faruk. For the first time since independence, direct government-to-government (G2G) trade has been established between Bangladesh and Pakistan. The first shipment of rice has arrived under an agreement signed between the two governments. The Office of the Controller of Movement and Storage of the Food Department reported that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed at the government level in Dhaka on January 14 regarding the import of 50,000 tons of Atap rice from Pakistan.
The MoU was signed between the Directorate General of Food and the Trading Corporation of Pakistan. Syed Rafiq Bashir Shah, Chairman of the Trading Corporation of Pakistan, and Abdul Khaleq, Director General of the Directorate General of Food, signed the agreement. Under this agreement, the ship carrying the first consignment of rice reached the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port on March 4 at 2 AM. Yesterday, Wednesday, at 2 PM, the ship docked at the port’s CCT-1 terminal.
