4 killed in collision of two launches in Meghna

Four people have died in a collision of two passenger launches in the Meghna River in Chandpur in dense fog.
The collision occurred between two launches named Adventure-9 and Zakir Samrat-3 at 2 am on Thursday (December 25) between Haimchar Upazila and Harina area.

The deceased are A. Gani (38), Md. Saju (45), Md. Hanif (60) and Mosa. Rina (35). They all live in Bhola district.

Around 12 noon, Sadarghat Naval Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sohag Rana said ,

“লঞ্চে সংঘর্ষের ঘটনায় চারজনের লাশ পাওয়া গেছে। লাশগুলো সদরঘাট টার্মিনালে রাখা হয়েছে। ময়নাতদন্তের জন্য লাশ মিটফোর্ড হাসপাতালের মর্গে পাঠানো হবে।”

Translation : “Four bodies were found in the collision of the launches. The bodies have been kept at the Sadarghat Terminal. The bodies will be sent to the Mitford Hospital morgue for autopsy.”

Jhalakathi Additional Assistant Superintendent of Police Sadar Circle Baijid Ibne Akbar said,

“মেঘনা নদীতে লঞ্চ দুর্ঘটনার ঘটনায় ঝালকাঠিগামী অ্যাডভেঞ্চার ৯ লঞ্চকে আটক করা হয়েছে।”

Translation : “The Jhalakathi-bound Adventure 9 launch has been detained in connection with the launch accident in the Meghna River.”

It is learned that two passenger launches, MV Adventure-9 from Sadarghat in the capital to Barisal and MV Zakir Samrat-3 from Bhola to Sadarghat, collided head-on in dense fog. Several parts of the MV Zakir Samrat-3 launch were damaged in the collision. After the accident, MV Adventure-9 headed towards Barisal and MV Zakir Samrat-3 started its journey towards Dhaka.

BIWTA Inspector Abdul Mannan in Chandpur said that the passengers got angry when they tried to bring the Zakir Samrat-3 launch to the Chandpur launch terminal late at night after the accident. At one stage, they even threatened to set the launch on fire. Seeing the situation deteriorating, the launch master left for Dhaka with the injured passengers.

Sadarghat Naval Police Station OC Sohag Rana had said at around 10:45 am today that eight people had been killed in the collision between the two launches. Later, after 12 pm, he said that four people had been killed in the incident.
