The coast of Japan has been shaken again by a powerful earthquake. The earthquake, which struck at around 11:15 p.m. local time on Monday, had a magnitude of 7.6. The event occurred about 44 kilometers (27 miles) offshore and its epicenter was 33 miles (50 kilometers) deep, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Tsunami potential

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a severe tsunami warning immediately after the earthquake. Tsunami waves of up to 10 feet are expected to hit the coast. The first tsunami wave is expected to hit the country’s eastern Pacific coast—from Aomori to Iwate—at around 11:40 p.m. local time, according to state broadcaster NHK.

Damage information

There were no initial reports of casualties. However, authorities have stepped up emergency preparedness given the magnitude of the earthquake and the potential for a tsunami.

Government warning

The Japan Meteorological Agency has urged people to evacuate coastal areas quickly and is closely monitoring the situation.
