Nagad’s Board of Directors Restructured, Chairman Kaiser Ahmed Chowdhury

Bangladesh Bank has reconstituted the board of directors of Bangladesh Postal Department’s digital financial service ‘Nagad’. The decision has been taken under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2024. Former AB Bank Managing Director (MD) Kaiser Ahmed Chowdhury has been appointed as the chairman of the newly formed 7-member board.

On June 23, 2025, Bangladesh Bank sent instructions to the Director General of the Postal Department in this regard, which formally instructed to start the activities of the new board.

Members of the new management board

In addition to Kaiser Ahmed Chowdhury, several talented and experienced personalities have joined the new board. The remaining members of the board are:

•Professor Dr. Niaz Asadullah
Professor at Monash University (Malaysia) and Honorary Professorial Fellow at North South University.

•Dr. Bazlul Haque Khandaker
Research Director at Policy Research Institute (PRI), who also served as a member of the previous board.

•Md. Anwar Hossain
Former Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank.

•Barrister Tanim Hossain Shawon
Well-known as a Supreme Court lawyer.

•Director General of Postal Department (Ex-officio Member)

•Joint Secretary, Debt Management Division, Finance Department, Ministry of Finance (Ex-officio Member)

In August 2023, there was a major change in the administration of Nagad. After August 5, several people associated with the organization left the country. In that context, Bangladesh Bank appointed an administrator to Nagad on August 21 to maintain good governance and stability of Nagad’s operations.

Later, in September 2023, a 5-member interim board was formed with former BIDS Director General K.A.S. Murshid as the chairman. However, a party approached the court questioning the validity of this board. In a recent ruling, the court declared Bangladesh Bank’s decision valid, paving the way for the formation of a new board.

Purpose of forming the new board

Bangladesh Bank has reconstituted this new management board at the request of the Postal Department. The directive sent says that the new board has been formed with the aim of strengthening Nagad’s future work plan and strategic management. It is expected that Nagad’s activities will be more transparent, effective and stable.
