Press Secretary Trapped Inside Khulna Press Club

Students Demand Police Commissioner’s Resignation

The Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Md. Shafiqul Alam (Senior Secretary), was trapped inside the Khulna Press Club on Saturday evening (28 June 2025). The situation occurred when members of the Baisommobirodhi Chhatra Andolon (Anti-Discrimination Student Movement) demanded the resignation of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) Commissioner Md. Zulfiqar Ali Haider.

Protest Erupted During Courtesy Visit

The press secretary was at the press club for a courtesy meeting with journalists when student protesters arrived. Hearing about his visit, the student activists quickly gathered outside the venue and blocked the road.

As a result, the press secretary became stuck inside the building and could not leave.

Protesters Issue a Strong Warning

The student leaders made it clear they would not let the press secretary leave until their demand was addressed.

“The press secretary will not be allowed to leave until the commissioner resigns.”

As of 7:30 PM that evening, he was still inside the press club, unable to exit due to the protest.

Journalist Describes the Incident

Journalist Mostofa Jamal Poplu spoke to Dhaka Tribune and explained the chain of events.

“After attending a discussion at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, the press secretary visited Khulna Press Club around 5 PM. Then, a section of the protesting students and citizens gathered in front of the club. As a result, no one inside the building could leave. The press secretary also got stuck. The protesters started saying that unless there’s an official statement about the KMP Commissioner’s resignation, the press secretary will not be allowed to exit.”

The Situation Remained Unresolved

As of the last report, no resolution had been reached, and the press secretary remained surrounded inside the press club while protesters held their ground.
