Warren Buffett Donates $6 Billion Worth of Shares

Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett, one of the most respected investors in the United States and chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., has made his largest annual donation to philanthropy. In June 2025, he donated $6 billion (6 billion USD) worth of shares of his investment company Berkshire Hathaway to five charities.

The donation is the largest single contribution in his long history of giving. This unprecedented contribution adds to a giving program that began nearly two decades ago, further cementing him as one of the world’s most respected philanthropists.

Which organizations received this donation?

Buffett has given his donation to five selected charities. The most notable of these is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has been given 9.43 million shares.

The other four organizations are run by members of Buffett’s family, namely:

•Susan Thomson Buffett Foundation – 943,384 shares

•Howard G. Buffett Foundation

•Sherwood Foundation

•Novo Foundation

The last three organizations above received the same amount, i.e. 660,366 shares each.

Total Giving and Wealth Situation

This latest donation brings Warren Buffett’s total giving to over $60 billion. Before the donation, his net worth was $152 billion, making him the world’s fifth-richest person according to Forbes magazine. However, after donating $6 billion, he is now ranked No. 6 on that list. However, he still owns 13.8% of Berkshire Hathaway. This donation shows how much importance Buffett places on his charitable activities.

•In June 2024, he donated $5.3 billion.

•In November 2024, he also gave another $1.14 billion to his family charities.

In 2023, Buffett amended his will, stating that 99.5% of his remaining assets would be given to a special charitable trust upon his death. The trust will be administered by his three children:

•Susie Buffett (age 71)

•Howard Buffett (age 70)

•Peter Buffett (age 67)
His announcement suggests that he has already expressed his intention to stop future donations to the Gates Foundation. In a statement, Buffett said,

“বার্কশায়ার হ্যাথাওয়ের কোনো শেয়ার বিক্রির পরিকল্পনা তাঁর নেই; বরং তিনি তাঁর সম্পদের বেশির ভাগটাই দান করে দিতে চান।”

In June last year, Buffett said,

“তাঁর মৃত্যু হলে গেটস ফাউন্ডেশনের জন্য তাঁর অনুদান বন্ধ হয়ে যাবে।”
Translation: “His donation to the Gates Foundation will cease upon his death.”
