The interim government has officially cancelled the observance of “New Bangladesh Day” on August 8. The decision was made during a meeting of the Advisory Council held on Sunday.
Chief Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Shafiqul Alam, shared the update through his verified Facebook account. The Advisory Council has decided to observe July 16 as ‘Martyrs’ Day’ and August 5 as ‘Mass Uprising Day’. However, August 8 will no longer be celebrated as a special day.

Previously, following the fall of the former government in a mass student-led uprising, the interim administration under the leadership of Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus had declared August 8 as “New Bangladesh Day.” However, this latest decision marks a shift in the symbolic days being recognized by the transitional authority.
Political analysts believe this move reflects a recalibration of national priorities and historical memory in the wake of recent upheavals. Public attention is now turning to the newly designated days that aim to honor the people’s sacrifices and aspirations in a rapidly changing political landscape.
