The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has questioned three officials from the Election Commission (EC) over the alleged wastage of around Tk 3,000 crore in the purchase of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The machines were bought during the previous Awami League government’s term for use in national elections.
Three EC Officers Under Investigation
On Wednesday (July 2, 2025), the ACC’s Assistant Director Rakibul Hayat began the questioning. The three EC officials summoned, and present are:
- Farhad Hossain, Deputy Secretary
- Farzana Akhtar, System Analyst
- Muhammad Ashraf Hossain, Former Senior Maintenance Engineer
In total, six EC officials were called in for questioning on this day.

Serious Allegations of Corruption and Misuse of Power
According to the ACC, the EVMs were bought without any tender, and at prices 10 times higher than their market value. According to states, Tk 150,000 was paid for each EVM, which is valued at approximately Tk 15,000.
This resulted in a financial loss of approximately Tk 3,172 crore to the government.
Former CEC Among the Accused
K.M. Nurul Huda, the former Chief Election Commissioner, and others are further named in the complaint and are accused with:
- Misusing their authority
- Breaking government financial rules
- Allowing irregular purchases without competitive bidding
ACC Finds Initial Proof in Their Investigation
The ACC says their early investigation into the matter has found primary evidence that supports the allegations. This includes signs of financial irregularities and overpricing in the EVM procurement process.
