A Bangladeshi national has been arrested in Kuwait for allegedly collecting illegal money (extortion) from roadside vendors. He was caught red-handed by the police during a recent operation.

According to Kuwaiti police, they are continuing operations to catch other members of this extortion group. A police officer said that the crackdown on illegal street shops and the money collected from them will now be more intense.

The arrested man faces several charges, including extortion, threatening behaviour, and illegal collection of money.

Street Vending is Illegal in Kuwait

Setting up street shops in Kuwait—especially on footpaths, in front of mosques, or inside city alleys—is strictly illegal and punishable under the law. However, many foreign nationals still ignore these rules and sell goods in these spots.

Extortion Group Targeted Vulnerable Vendors

A gang has reportedly been active around these illegal shops for a long time. Members of this group forcefully collect money from the vendors through threats and fear. Some Bangladeshi expatriates are believed to be involved in this illegal activity.

Police Acted After Complaints from Victims

Based on multiple complaints, the Kuwaiti investigation team launched an operation to track and catch the gang. As reported by Arab Times on Wednesday (July 2), a Bangladeshi man was arrested while collecting money from footpath vendors.

The Arab Times also released a video on their website that allegedly shows the man in the act of extortion.

Bangladeshi Community Leaders Concerned

Leaders from the Bangladeshi community in Kuwait have expressed serious concern about this incident. They said such actions damage the reputation of Bangladesh and urged expatriates to follow local laws and behave responsibly.
