Sherpur floods: 242 primary schools closed, sanctuary centre opened

The expulsion rain and the mountain which has come down from Ujan, India has flooded 28 unions of 5 upazilas of Sherpur. Into these, the situation of Jhinaygati and Nalitabari upazila is horrible.

It is known that there are 741 primary schools in Sherpur district. Among these, 301 schools have been flooded. And 242 primary schools have been closed. Meanwhile, 59 primary schools are being used as a shelter centre, the local administration said.

Regional sources said that on Friday, October 4, the district experienced flooding as a result of last Thursday’s (October 3) rainfall. There are several broken rivers. The mountains have swamped almost 200 communities. There have been roughly 1.5 million consumers. Various volunteer organisations and groups from outside of Sherpur are helping in their rescue efforts.

More importantly, the Nalitabari upazila has been flooded. 12 unions of that upazila have been flooded. 119 of the 121 primary schools in Upazila are closed.

Sherpur District Primary Education Officer Md. Obaidullah said the flood situation is a natural disaster. We don’t have any hands here. The primary school which has water has been closed. If water is not rising inside the school, education activities will run normally.
