The International Cricket Council (ICC), the governing body of world cricket, has brought in a new face – India’s Sanjog Gupta. He was officially appointed as the seventh Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the ICC on Monday (July 7). It is a momentous announcement for more than 2 billion cricket fans worldwide.
Sanjog Gupta is an accomplished sports administrator, savvy media planner and advocate of technology-enabled sports policy. He was most recently the CEO of the Sports and Live Experiences division of GeoStar, which was formed after the merger of Disney-Star and Viacom18.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah said,
‘সঞ্জোগ গুপ্তা ক্রীড়া কৌশল ও বাণিজ্যিকীকরণে বিশাল অভিজ্ঞতা নিয়ে আইসিসিতে আসছেন। তার প্রযুক্তিপ্রেম ও ভক্তদের দৃষ্টিকোণ বোঝার ক্ষমতা আইসিসির লক্ষ্যপূরণে দারুণ ভূমিকা রাখবে।’
Translation: “Sanjog Gupta comes to the ICC with vast experience in sports strategy and commercialization. His passion for technology and ability to understand the fans’ perspective will be invaluable in helping the ICC achieve its goals.”

A Global Visionary Takes The Lead
Sanjog Gupta joins the ICC to replace Geoff Allardyce, who took over as interim CEO in 2020 and stepped down in January 2024 after serving full-time from 2021.
Translation: “Cricket, which has a global fan base of nearly 2 billion, is on the verge of unprecedented growth. The inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the rapid advancement of technology will bring new momentum to the game.”
Career and Achievements
Sanjog Gupta’s sports-related career began in 2010 when he joined Star India in the content department. He later became the CEO of Star Sports in 2020, playing a key role in the programming and strategy departments.
Under his Leadership
- New dimensions were added to the broadcasting of IPL and ICC tournaments;
- Domestic leagues like Pro Kabaddi, ISL grew in popularity;
- International sporting events like the English Premier League and Wimbledon expanded their viewership in India;
- Pioneered women’s sports and technology-based coverage.
In 2024, Disney-Star and Viacom 18 merged to form JioStar, where he was appointed as the company’s first CEO.
Sanjog Gupta takes over the ICC at a time when the cricket world is moving towards Olympic inclusion, technological advancements, growing digital audiences and expanding into new markets. Under his leadership, the ICC has a huge opportunity – to build a modern, global and inclusive future for cricket.
