Another heartbreaking accident occurred in the Anandapur area of Halishahar, Chittagong city. A three-year-old child Mariam, lost her life after falling into a drain. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday (July 9) at around 3 pm.
Details of The Accident
It is learned that little Mariam was going to a nearby shop. Her life was cut short on the way due to extreme negligence. According to the locals, the slab of the drain at the scene was already open and the drain was not easily visible as it was filled with rainwater. When Mariam inadvertently stepped into it, she was swept away by the strong current of water.

Upon receiving the news of the accident, a diving team from the Agrabad station of the Chittagong Fire Service reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. The child was rescued at approximately 3:54 pm and was immediately taken to the hospital where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Chittagong Fire Service told the media,
শিশুটি বাড়ির পাশের একটি দোকানে যাচ্ছিল। ঘটনাস্থলে নালার স্ল্যাবটি তোলা থাকায় ওপরে পানি জমে ছিল। ফলে নালাটি বোঝা যায়নি। অসাবধানতাবশত শিশুটি সেখানে পা রাখলে পানির স্রোতে ভেসে যায়। প্রথমে স্থানীয়রা এবং সাড়ে ৩টা থেকে ফায়ার সার্ভিসের কর্মকর্তারা উদ্ধার অভিযান চালায়।
Translation: The child was going to a shop next to the house. The drain slab had been lifted at the scene, so water had accumulated on it. As a result, the drain could not be understood. When the child inadvertently stepped there, he was swept away by the water current. Initially, locals and fire service officials launched a rescue operation from 3:30 PM.
Chittagong Fire Service Assistant Director Md. Anwar Hossain said,
স্থানীয়দের কাছ থেকে সংবাদ পেয়ে আগ্রাবাদ স্টেশন থেকে ঘটনাস্থলে ডুবুরি টিম পৌঁছে শিশুটিকে উদ্ধার করে। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে তাকে হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাওয়া হলে কর্তব্যরত চিকিৎসক মৃত ঘোষণা করেন।
Translation: Upon receiving information from locals, a diving team from Agrabad station reached the spot and rescued the child. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

- August 27, 2023: 18-month-old baby Yasin Arafat fell into a drain in Rangipara, Agrabad. His body was found 17 hours later.
