Foreign Investment in Bangladesh Doubles Compared to Last Year

Foreign Investment

Recent data from Bangladesh Bank shows that foreign direct investment (FDI) in Bangladesh has increased significantly in 2025 compared to the previous year. However, some media reports have spread negative views about the economy and investment climate. The BIDA Chairman shares his insights and clarifies the situation.

Strong Growth in FDI This Year

According to Bangladesh Bank, the net foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first three months of 2025 reached ৳10,500 crore, which is more than double compared to the same period in 2024.

Looking at a six-month period from October, the FDI reached ৳16,500 crore, which is exactly double compared to the last six months of the previous government.

“Counting from October, FDI came to ৳16,500 crore in six months, which is exactly double compared to the last six months of the previous government.”

The Real Reason Behind the Increase

Ashik Chowdhury, The Chairman of the Board of Investment (BIDA) said:

“I have said before, our role in this year’s FDI increase is minimal. The investment decisions were made earlier. Possibly, the process has become a bit more efficient.”

He added that BIDA and Bangladesh Bank have improved their scrutiny and approval of foreign loans, which has helped speed up the investment process.

Addressing Negative Reports and Confusion

ashik Chowdhury expressed concern about misleading negative reports:

“About two months ago, a cartoonish report framed the same period. After reading it, it feels like we only jump from planes, attend summits, and give presentations — and do nothing else. Hence, investment destruction, economic destruction, country destruction, etc.”

He called such provisional or proposed data-based negative reporting “দুঃখজনক” (sad) because it confuses the public in a country already struggling with data clarity.

Hope from Responsible Journalism

The Chairman praised some journalists who ask the right questions and try to understand the topic deeply before reporting. He hopes others will follow this example for more accurate and fair reporting.
