Imam Attack in Chandpur with Machete After Friday Prayer

A shocking incident the imam attack in Chandpur occurred after Friday prayers when the mosque’s khatib was brutally injured with a machete. One suspect has been arrested, and an investigation is ongoing.

Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Bahar Mia confirmed the incident, saying, “The attack took place at Professor Para Mollabari Jame Mosque. The suspect was apprehended immediately and an investigation is underway.”

The injured Khatib, Nurur Rahman Madani, was rushed to Chandpur Government General Hospital in critical condition. According to Dr. Syed Ahmad Kajol, “The victim received a deep cut near the base of his ear that required 12 stitches. His condition is critical and he’s under close observation.”

Nurur Rahman is the son of late Mawlana Jamal Uddin from Dakshin Gunrajdi village and is the founding imam of the Professor Para Mollabari Mosque. He is a graduate of the Islamic University of Madinah.

The attacker, Md. Billal Hossain (50), is a vegetable trader from Bakultola in Chandpur town and the son of late Aiyub Ali.

Nurur Rahman’s son, Afnan Taki, stated, “I heard that Billal Hossain stormed into the mosque after Friday prayers and struck my father with a sharp weapon on the head over something related to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). We still don’t understand why he would commit such a horrific act.”

Another mosque imam, Mawlana Mahbub Hasan, said, “After the sermon, Billal wanted to speak about something but was stopped by others in the mosque. He sat down for prayer, but after it ended, he suddenly attacked Huzur (Nurur Rahman) with a machete as he was leaving.”

In police custody, Billal claimed, “In my view, the Khatib insulted the Prophet (PBUH). That’s why I attacked him.” However, the injured Khatib declined to comment on the allegation.

This incident has sparked outrage and fear among local worshippers and the broader religious community. Many expressed deep concern, saying, “Differences in religious interpretation may arise, but such a violent act is not part of Islam. If this attacker is not brought to justice swiftly, similar incidents may increase.”

OC Bahar Mia added, “A case is being prepared by the mosque committee. We are thoroughly investigating the matter and taking legal action.”

The brutal attack has cast a shadow of grief, anger, and protest in the local community. People are demanding swift justice and exemplary punishment for the attacker.
