9 CUET Students Asked to Explain Over Links to Political Committee

9 CUET Students

Despite politics being banned on the campus of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), 9 students have been accused of being involved with Chhatra Dal, the student wing of a political party. Their names appeared in the recently published draft committee of CUET Chhatra Dal branch, prompting the university administration to issue show-cause notices against them.

Show-Cause Notices Issued by University Administration

On Friday, 11 July 2025, the university’s Student Welfare Office director, Professor Md. Mahbubul Alam, signed 9 separate notices asking these students to submit a written explanation within 3 working days.

The notices said these students were accused of creating an unstable environment and participating in activities against university discipline. The administration asked why punitive action should not be taken against them according to university rules.

The students have been asked to appear in person at the Student Welfare Office and respond by 27 July 2025.

Background: Draft Committee Names Leak Sparks Campus Protest

The incident began when, on Thursday evening (10 July), a 9-member draft committee of CUET Chhatra Dal, signed by the central president and general secretary of the student wing, was leaked on Facebook.

The public disclosure of CUET students’ names caused a stir on campus. In protest, general students gathered and staged demonstrations the same night. They condemned the formation of such a political committee despite the university’s ban on political activities and demanded action against those named.
