BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has raised serious questions about the government’s failure to ensure the safety of citizens and protect their lives and property.
He made these comments while speaking virtually at a meeting held on Saturday (12 July) with the families of those killed during the July uprising, organized in a hotel in Dhaka.
Why is the Government Failing to Do Its Job?
During the event, Tarique Rahman questioned the role of the government in dealing with rising lawlessness.
“সরকারের দায়িত্ব মানুষের জানমালের নিরাপত্তা হেফাজত করা। কিন্তু সরকার কেন ব্যর্থ হচ্ছে, এই প্রশ্ন আমাদের সরকারের কাছে। তারা এখন আশ্রয় দিচ্ছে, প্রশ্রয় দিচ্ছে।”
“The government’s duty is to protect the lives and property of its people. But why is the government failing? This is the question we ask. Now they are giving shelter and support (to the wrongdoers).”
Why Aren’t the Killers Being Arrested?
He also asked why no arrests have been made, even after video evidence clearly showed someone being murdered.
“যে ঘটনাটি ঘটেছে, যাকে সরাসরি হত্যা করতে ভিডিওতে দেখা গেছে তাকে কেন গ্রেফতার করা হচ্ছে না?”
“The incident that happened—why is the person, who was clearly seen in a video committing the murder, not being arrested?”
Tarique further questioned whether the government or some officials in the administration were silently supporting the violence.
“তাহলে কি আমরা ধরে নেবো, যারা বিভিন্নভাবে মব সৃষ্টি করছে, একটা পরিস্থিতি তৈরি করতে চাচ্ছে, সেখানে সরকারের প্রচ্ছন্ন কোনও প্রশ্রয় আছে, প্রশাসনের কারও কারও প্রশ্রয় আছে।”
“Should we assume that those creating mobs and chaos are being silently encouraged by the government, or by some in the administration?”

Hidden Enemies of Democracy Still Active
Tarique Rahman warned that conspiracies against democracy are far from over. He said the enemies may not be visible yet, but they are becoming clearer day by day.
“গণতন্ত্রের বিরুদ্ধে ষড়যন্ত্র শেষ হয়ে যায়নি। ৮-৯ মাস আগেই বলেছি অদৃশ্য শত্রু আছে, ধীরে ধীরে দৃশ্যমান হচ্ছে অদৃশ্য শত্রু।”
“The conspiracy against democracy is not over. I said 8–9 months ago that there are hidden enemies—and now they are slowly becoming visible.”
The Law Must Be Equal for All
Tarique emphasized that justice should not be biased and criminals from any political group must face legal action.
“সরকারকে বরাবরই বলছি, অন্যায়কারী যেই হোক, আমরা প্রশ্রয় দেবো না। যে অন্যায় করবে, অন্যায়ই। তার বিরুদ্ধে প্রচলিত আইন অনুয়ায়ী ব্যবস্থা হবে।”
“We always tell the government—no matter who commits the crime, we won’t support them. A crime is a crime. Legal action must be taken under the law.”
“অন্যায়কারী কখনও কোন দলের হতে পারে না।”
“A wrongdoer can never truly belong to any party.”
Who’s Blocking Peaceful Environments Across the Country?
Tarique raised concerns about the disturbances in different parts of the country and asked people to boldly question those responsible for creating unrest.
“জোরগলায় প্রশ্ন তুলুন, কেন জুলাই অভুত্থানে শহীদের বিচার বিলম্বিত হচ্ছে, মব সৃষ্টি করছে।”
“Raise your voice and ask—why is justice delayed for the martyrs of the July uprising, and who is creating mobs?”
He Also Spoke About Recent Youth Leader’s Killing
Tarique Rahman also addressed the recent murder of a former Jubo Dal leader in Khulna.
“খুলনায় যুবদলকর্মীকে হত্যা করা হয়েছে, কেন সেটা নিয়ে কথা বলা হচ্ছে না?”
“A Jubo Dal activist has been killed in Khulna—why is no one talking about it?”
“সেই বিচারের দাবি করা হলে কেন বলা হচ্ছে, বিএনপি লাশ নিয়ে মিছিল করছে।”
“When we demand justice, why are they saying BNP is just doing processions with dead bodies?”
He concluded by saying:
“এই প্রশ্নের জবাব খুঁজতে হবে। এই প্রশ্নের জবাবের সাথে বাংলাদেশের অস্তিত্বের সম্পর্ক রয়েছে।”
“We must find the answers to these questions. Because the answers are connected to the very existence of Bangladesh.”
“ইতিহাস দেখতে হবে, কারা বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা-সার্বভৌমত্ব নিয়ে কথা বলেছে, অবস্থান নিয়েছে, কারা বিরোধিতা করেছে, এ বিষয়গুলো আমাদের বিবেচনায়।”
“We need to look at history—who spoke for Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty, and who opposed it. These things must be considered.”
