Sohel Taj, son of the nation’s first Prime Minister Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad and former State Minister for Home Affairs, has finally spoken out regarding the recent violence in Gopalganj. In a strongly worded statement, he described the attack as a “vile attempt to assassinate the leaders of the July-August mass uprising.”
He even went so far as to suggest that the mastermind behind the incident could be someone he referred to as the “Devil Queen.” On Thursday, July 17, Sohel Taj made these remarks through a post on his verified Facebook account.
“The main objective of the July 16 attack in Gopalganj,” he wrote, “was a heinous attempt to kill the leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the July-August Uprising — Nahid, Sarjis, Hasnat, and Zara. I wouldn’t be surprised if the ‘Devil Queen’ herself ordered this attack.”

Criticizing the political establishment, he further added, “Forget self-awareness, self-criticism, or remorse after committing murder, abduction, extrajudicial killings, genocide, repression, and destroying democracy after siphoning off hundreds of thousands of crores in corruption and fleeing the country after being slapped down by students and the public, now she is conspiring to destroy the nation. Orders are being issued to replicate terrorist-style actions like in Gopalganj all across the country.”
The comments come after a violent clash on Wednesday during a scheduled ‘March to Gopalganj’ rally organized by the National Citizen Party (NCP). Activists from the now-banned Chhatra League and members of the Awami League allegedly attacked the gathering.
What began as a standoff escalated into a bloody confrontation, leaving at least four people dead and hundreds injured, including police, journalists, and bystanders. The situation in the district remains tense, with curfew imposed to restore order.
