Kushtia, 17 July (Thursday), Mufti Amir Hamza, a prominent Islamic speaker and potential candidate of Jamaat-e-Islami for Kushtia-3 constituency, has made controversial remarks demanding the name change of Gopalganj district and the abolition of its existence.
He said at a protest march and rally organized by the Kushtia district branch of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Gopalganj to protest the anarchy of the Chhatra League,
শুধু গোপালগঞ্জ জেলার নাম পরিবর্তন নয়, আমি মনে করি— আশপাশের চারটা জেলার মধ্যে ভাগ করে দিলে ভালো হয়। বিশেষ করে নড়াইল, ফরিদপুর, মাদারীপুর ও বরিশাল- এই চারটা জেলার মধ্যে ভাগ করে দেওয়া হোক।
Translation: Not only changing the name of Gopalganj district, I think it would be better to divide it among the four surrounding districts. Especially Narail, Faridpur, Madaripur and Barisal – these four districts should be divided.

Amir Hamza said,
গোপালগঞ্জকে বাংলার মানচিত্র থেকে মুছে ৬৩ জেলা নিয়ে বাংলাদেশ করা হোক। এ জেলা দেশের মানচিত্রে না থাকাই ভালো।
Translation: “Gopalganj should be erased from the map of Bengal and Bangladesh should be made up of 63 districts. It is better that this district does not appear on the map of the country.”
He said that the attack on the July fighters was tantamount to an attack on the country’s 180 million people and demanded the immediate arrest and trial of those involved.
Other speakers from the district Jamaat said,
অধ্যাদেশ জারির মাধ্যমে গোপালগঞ্জের নতুন নাম রাখতে হবে। এ ছাড়া জেলাটির পুলিশ সুপার এ ঘটনার দায় এড়াতে পারে না বলে উল্লেখ করে তাকে জবাবদিহিতার আওতায় আনার দাবি জানান তারা। Translation: Gopalganj should be given a new name through the issuance of an ordinance. They also demanded that the district’s police superintendent cannot avoid responsibility for the incident and be held accountable.
