BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has clearly stated, “BNP is not crazy about coming to power.” He warned that no one can come to power by undermining the party, even if a BNP leader is alive.
He made the remarks while participating in a silent procession and prayer meeting organized in memory of the martyrs of the July-August uprising in Paltan, the capital, on Friday (July 18).
Leaders and activists flock to Paltan
On the occasion of the event, leaders and activists from different wards of the capital started gathering in Paltan from after 3 pm. The processions passed through Paltan and ended in front of Abul Hotel in Malibagh, where party leaders and activists paid tribute to the martyrs.

Mirza Abbas said,
শহিদদের কেউ বেঁচে থাকলে আজ লজ্জা পেত। তারা যে কারণে শহীদ হয়েছেন আজ তা বাস্তবায়ন হচ্ছে না। তাদেরকে বিক্রি করে রাজনীতিতে প্রতিষ্ঠা পাওয়ার চেষ্টা করছে একটি দল। একজন পীর আগে জামায়াতের বিরুদ্ধে কথা বললেও আজ তিনি জামায়াতের কোলে উঠে বসেছেন। জামায়াত একসময় বিএনপির মাধ্যমে মন্ত্রী হলেও আজ বাস্তবতা ভিন্ন।
Translation: If any of the martyrs were alive, they would be ashamed. The reason they were martyred is not being implemented today. A party is trying to gain political establishment by selling them. A pir spoke against Jamaat earlier, but today he sits in Jamaat’s lap. Jamaat was once a minister through BNP, but today the reality is different.
He said,
আমরা একটি ঐক্যবদ্ধ দেশ চাই, যা দেশকে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাবে।অনেকে আজ বিএনপিকে আওয়ামী লীগের কাতারে ফেলার চেষ্টা করছে। বিএনপি পায়ে পা দিয়ে ঝগড়া করবে না। তবে বাটে পড়লে কিছু করার নাই। বিএনপি ক্ষমতায় যাওয়ার জন্য পাগল নয়। বিএনপির একজন জীবিত থাকতেও তাদেরকে মাইনাস করে ক্ষমতায় যাওয়ার খায়েশ পূরণ হবে না।
Translation: We want a united country that will take the country forward. Many are trying to put BNP in the ranks of Awami League today. BNP will not fight with its feet. However, there is nothing to be done if it falls apart. BNP is not crazy about coming to power. Even if one of BNP is alive, their desire to come to power by misusing them will not be fulfilled.
Accusing the government of biased behavior, Mirza Abbas said,
সরকারকে বলি, বিএনপির প্রতি পক্ষপাতমূলক আচরণ করবেন না। নির্বাচন না দিলে ভাববো, আপনারা দেশকে অশান্ত করার চেষ্টা করছেন।
Translation: I tell the government, don’t be biased towards BNP. If we don’t hold elections, we will think that you are trying to destabilize the country.
