Mizanur Rahman Azhari wrote: Why does Bangladesh need a regional office of the United Nations here?
In the countries where they already have regional offices, are the people really living in peace?
If we ourselves do not build strong understanding and trust among each other, what can they really do here?
What actually happened:
This week, the United Nations Human Rights Office and the Bangladesh government signed an agreement to open a UN mission in Bangladesh for three years. This mission will help promote and protect human rights in the country.

The agreement was signed by Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Asad Alam Siam, Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary.
Since last August, the UN Human Rights Office has become much more involved in Bangladesh. They have been working with different groups to improve human rights and have conducted a detailed investigation into the harsh crackdown on mass protests.
Volker Türk said, “This agreement shows that Bangladesh is serious about human rights during this important time of change.”
He added that the new mission will help by supporting the government to follow the recommendations from their investigation. The mission will work directly with the government, civil society, and others by offering expert advice and assistance for important reforms Bangladesh is making.
The mission will also provide training and technical support to government officials and civil society groups, helping Bangladesh meet its national and international commitments on human rights.
