In 2024, Nihon Hidankyo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was announced today at 3 PM Bangladesh time and 11 AM local time from the Nobel Institute in Oslo, the capital of Norway. Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb survivors formed a grassroots organization known as “hibakusha.” According to the Nobel Committee, Nihon Hidankyo received the prestigious prize for its efforts to eradicate nuclear weapons and for using eyewitness testimony to expose the inhumanity of their use. The organization started a worldwide movement in response to the atomic bombings of Japan in August 1945. Its members have devoted countless hours to raising awareness about the disastrous humanitarian effects of nuclear weapons. Over time, the organization’s movement grew into a powerful global ideology, declaring the use of nuclear weapons as immoral. In 2023, Iran’s Nargis Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight against the oppression of Iranian women and her promotion of human rights and freedom for all.
