Professor Dr. ASM Amanullah, Vice Chancellor of the National University (NU) of Bangladesh, has announced that the university has undertaken timely reforms in its curriculum to enhance students’ skills and meet the demands of the modern world.
He made the statement on Friday (July 25) at the closing ceremony of a daylong workshop titled “Mental Health Awareness and Building Self-Confidence Among Students of NU-Affiliated Colleges”, held at the University Women’s Federation College in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
“Good mental health is a foundation of quality education,” said Dr. Amanullah. “Only mentally well students can stay focused on studies, absorb new knowledge, and actively participate in learning. Raising mental health awareness among students is essential to ensure meaningful education.”
He stressed that stress, anxiety, and depression reduce students’ concentration and enthusiasm, ultimately hindering their learning process. “In developed countries, educational institutions give special attention to mental health education. National University is following the same path,” he added.
To equip students for the global job market, the university has updated its syllabus with industry-relevant content, integrated ICT-based learning, and implemented various training programs for both students and teachers.

The university has also signed partnerships with organizations like UNICEF, the National Skills Development Authority (NSDA), and a2i, among others, to strengthen practical skills and employability.
Mohammad Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister, attended the event as a special guest. He praised the initiative, saying, “Mentally healthy students are more creative and capable of critical thinking—skills that are vital for the future. NU’s initiative is both timely and commendable.”
The workshop also featured speeches by course coordinator Professor Kamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury from the University of Dhaka’s Clinical Psychology Department, Professor Robayet Ferdous from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, and Dr. Faiza Ahmed, Senior Instructor of Child Psychology at the Multidisciplinary Training Center. The event was supervised by Salma Parvin, Director of NU’s Teacher Training Department.
A total of 160 students from five NU-affiliated colleges including University Women’s Federation College, Ideal College, New Model Degree College, Dr. Maleka College, and Mohammadpur Mohila College participated in the workshop. Certificates were distributed to participants by the Vice Chancellor and other dignitaries at the end of the program.
