Senior journalist and political analyst Masud Kamal has strongly criticized the current government for following the same old governing style. In a YouTube video released on Friday, he claimed that despite being in power for a year, the government has failed to bring real reforms and continues human rights practices similar to the previous regime. He also mentioned findings from Human Rights Watch (HRW), stating the new administration is still arresting and detaining political opponents unjustly.
Government Still Running in Old Style
Masud Kamal, a respected journalist and political analyst, said that the government is still operating like before. He made these comments in a video published on YouTube this Friday.
“সরকার চলছে আগের স্টাইলে। মানবাধিকার পরিস্থিতিও চলছে আগের স্টাইলে।”
Translation: “The government is running in the old style. Even the human rights situation remains the same.”
He questioned the government’s claims about reform.
“সরকার নাকি অনেক বিষয় সংস্কার করবেন; আমরা জানতে চাই আপনারা সংস্কার বোঝেন? আপনারা যদি এই সংস্কার বোঝেন, সংস্কারগুলো মানেন, তবে এই যে একবছর আপনারা ক্ষমতায় আছেন, সংস্কারগুলো আপনারা কেন ব্যবহার করছেন না।”
Translation: “The government said it would bring many reforms; we want to know what you mean by reforms? If you understand and believe in these reforms, then why haven’t you implemented them even after being in power for a year?”

Human Rights Watch Also Raised Concerns
Masud Kamal pointed out that international organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) has also criticized the government’s human rights record. According to him:
“সরকার চলছে আগের স্টাইলে, এমনকি মানবাধিকার পরিস্থিতিও চলছে আগের স্টাইলে যেটা হিউম্যান রাইটস ওয়াচ বলছে। তাহলে আপনারা কী করেছেন এই একবছরে?”
Translation: “The government is following the old style, even the human rights situation is the same – as stated by Human Rights Watch. So, what have you done in the past year?”
Comparison with Previous Government
Masud Kamal referred to HRW’s report that compares the current government with the previous one led by Sheikh Hasina.
“হিউম্যান রাইটস ওয়াচ আগের সরকারের সঙ্গে এই সরকারের একটা তুলনা করে বলেছে— শেখ হাসিনার শাসন আমলের মতো ভয়ভীতি ও দমন-পীড়ন কমেছে। কিন্তু একই সঙ্গে নতুন সরকার রাজনৈতিক প্রতিপক্ষকে দমন করতে নির্বিচার গ্রেপ্তার ও অন্যায় আটকের পথ বেছে নিচ্ছে।”
Translation: “Human Rights Watch compared the current government with the previous one, saying that fear and repression have decreased compared to Sheikh Hasina’s time. But at the same time, the new government is using arbitrary arrests and unjust detentions to suppress political opposition.”
“This Is Not Sheikh Hasina’s Autocratic Government Anymore”
Masud Kamal reminded viewers that the new government is under Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
“এখন কিন্তু শেখ হাসিনার স্বৈরাচারী সরকার নেই। এখন নোবেল শান্তি পুরস্কার বিজয়ী ড. ইউনূসের সরকার। হিউম্যান রাইটস ওয়াচ বলছে এই সরকার মানবাধিকার ঠিকমতো রাখতে পারছে না। তারা রাজনৈতিক প্রতিপক্ষকে দমন করার জন্য নির্বিচারে গ্রেপ্তার করছে এবং অন্যায়ভাবে আটক করছে।”
Translation: “This is no longer Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic government. Now it’s the government of Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Yunus. But Human Rights Watch says this government is failing to uphold human rights. They are arbitrarily arresting and detaining political opponents.”
