Passenger Attacks Airport Staff Over Extra Baggage Fees – Jaw Broken in Violent Incident

Extra Baggage Fees

At Srinagar Airport in India, a senior army officer violently attacked four SpiceJet employees after being asked to pay for excess cabin baggage. One staff member’s jaw was broken, and others were seriously injured. The airline has filed a complaint and started the process to ban the passenger from future flights.

What Happened at the Airport?

A serious incident occurred at Srinagar Airport when Lieutenant Colonel Ritesh Kumar Singh, an Indian army officer, allegedly attacked four staff members of the airline SpiceJet. The dispute began during the check-in for a Delhi-bound flight on 26 July.

His two cabin bags weighed 16 kg, while SpiceJet allows only 7 kg. When the airline staff told him about the extra weight and asked him to pay an additional fee, he refused.

The Violence Caught on Camera

Things escalated quickly. A video of the incident shows the officer attacking staff using a steel signboard stand.

According to SpiceJet:

“এই হামলার ঘটনায় আমাদের কর্মীরা গুরুতর আঘাত পেয়েছেন।”
“Our staff were seriously injured in this attack.”

One staff member lost consciousness and fell to the ground, and the passenger allegedly kept kicking him. Another staff member who tried to help also got kicked in the jaw, causing heavy bleeding from the nose and mouth.

Security Protocol Violated

The airline stated that Ritesh Kumar tried to enter the aerobridge without completing the boarding process, which is a serious breach of airport safety rules.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) brought him back from the gate, but he became even more aggressive and beat up four ground staff.

“বোর্ডিং প্রক্রিয়া সম্পন্ন না করেই জোরপূর্বক অ্যারোব্রিজে প্রবেশ করেন।”
“He forcefully entered the aerobridge without completing the boarding process.”

Legal Action and Investigation

  • An FIR (police case) has been filed by SpiceJet with the local police.

  • CCTV footage has been handed over to authorities.

  • SpiceJet has also started the process of putting the officer on the “No-Fly List”, which means he may be banned from flying in the future.

Army Response

The Indian Army has responded to the matter:

“সেনাবাহিনী সব স্তরে শৃঙ্খলা বজায় রাখতে প্রতিশ্রুতিবদ্ধ।”
“The army is committed to maintaining discipline at all levels.”

They said the case is under review and they are waiting for investigation results before taking any internal action.
