Deadly Floods in Pakistan: Over 344 People Killed in Just 48 Hours

Pakistan

Heavy rains and flash floods have caused massive destruction in Pakistan, killing at least 344 people in just two days. The worst-hit region is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where most of the casualties have been reported. Rescue operations are ongoing, but poor weather, landslides, and damaged infrastructure are making relief efforts extremely difficult.

Death Toll Rises Rapidly

In the last 48 hours, devastating floods in northwest Pakistan have killed at least 344 people. Out of these, 328 deaths occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province alone, making it the worst-affected region. Rescue operations are being carried out in at least nine flood-hit districts.

Military Helicopter Crash During Rescue

A tragic incident occurred during rescue operations when a military helicopter, engaged in flood relief work, crashed and killed five crew members. This has further slowed down the ongoing rescue and relief missions in the disaster-hit provinces.

Areas Most Affected

The floods and landslides have severely hit several regions, including:

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – Highest number of casualties and damage.

  • Gilgit-Baltistan – Several houses destroyed or partially damaged.

  • Azad Kashmir – Dozens of homes destroyed completely.

  • Districts like Buner, Bajaur, and Battagram in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also faced deadly flash floods.

Hundreds of Houses Swept Away

The floods have damaged over 100 houses across different provinces.

  • In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 34 houses were partially damaged and 14 were completely destroyed.

  • In Gilgit-Baltistan, 14 houses were partially damaged while 3 were completely destroyed.

  • In Azad Kashmir, 23 houses were partially damaged and 28 were fully destroyed.

Roads, Communication and Rescue Challenges

Most roads in the flood-affected areas have been blocked due to landslides and heavy rain. As a result, rescue workers are being forced to travel on foot to reach stranded people.

Telecommunication has also been severely affected. With mobile towers damaged, many areas remain completely cut off from communication.

Sending relief supplies, ambulances, and medical equipment has become extremely difficult because of broken roads and continuous rain.

Government Response

On 15 August, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to review the situation. He gave urgent instructions to ensure that relief reaches the flood-affected areas as quickly as possible.
