Sarwar Alam, currently serving as Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, has been appointed as the new Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sylhet. This change comes at a time when Sylhet has been facing widespread criticism regarding stone looting and theft.
New Appointment in Sylhet Administration
Md. Sarwar Alam, who was working as a Deputy Secretary (attached) in the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, has officially been appointed as the new DC of Sylhet.
He has also been serving as the Private Secretary (PS) to the Ministry’s Adviser, Professor Asif Nazrul.

Government Order Issued
The appointment was confirmed through a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Monday, August 18, 2025.
The notification stated that Md. Sarwar Alam will take charge as the new Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet immediately.
Replacement of Former DC
Before this appointment, Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad had been serving as the DC of Sylhet.
Now, he has been transferred and made an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the Ministry of Public Administration.
Context Behind the Change
This major administrative reshuffle comes amid strong discussions and criticisms over illegal stone looting and theft in Sylhet.
Many believe that the government has decided to bring in a new DC to strengthen monitoring and restore order in the district administration
