In a distressing incident in Char Balua area of Char Elahi Union, Companiganj Upazila, Noakhali, a mother and her 17-year-old daughter were reportedly abducted from their home and gang-raped by six men on the night of October 20. This crucial incident took place on Sunday night. The victims initially sought assistance from local community leaders but received no support. Frustrated by the lack of action, they approached a local police camp on October 26 to file a formal complaint. The police promptly detained two suspects, identified as Hasan and Harun, for further investigation and took them to Companiganj police station. According to the mother’s report, six men from the same locality entered their home around 11 p.m., bound her brother-in-law, and forcibly dragged the mother and daughter outside. The three of the men took her to the pond’s edge while the other three took her daughter near the kitchen area beside the house. They assaulted her and her daughter outside the kitchen until 3.00 am. The assailants also stole money and valuables, issuing threats to ensure the victims would remain silent about the incident.
The following morning, the victims reported the attack to local leaders, yet they encountered delays and inaction in receiving assistance. Left with no other options, they turned to the police for help. Reports indicate that the suspects are linked to the late Abdul Matin Tota, a former local political figure who was murdered on August 5. Since the incident, the accused have allegedly been threatening the victims, raising serious concerns for their safety. Gazi Muhammad Fouzul Azim, the officer-in-charge of Companiganj Police Station, confirmed that the victims have lodged a formal complaint and that legal action will be initiated based on their statements. Every day, women face the threat of violence, harassment, and discrimination. This recent abduction and gang rape of these mother and daughter is a chilling reminder of the urgent need for change in our society. It is unacceptable that such brutal acts occur, and even more concerning that victims often do not receive the justice they deserve.
