11 air-conditioned Ashok Leyland buses were sent to Bhutan by Ifad Autos Ltd., making them the first company from Bangladesh to sell buses internationally. Made at Ifad’s factory in Dhamrai, Dhaka, this shipment marks a significant change for Bangladesh, which has historically been an importer in the bus market.
The chairman of the Ifad Group, Iftekhar Ahmed Tipu, emphasised this achievement as a critical step in diversifying Bangladesh’s exports. With the government’s help, Ifad hopes to expand into other possible markets, such as the Maldives, Nepal, Myanmar, and parts of northeastern India where demand for comparable cars has increased, he said.
With the technical assistance of Ashok Leyland, Ifad Autos started manufacturing vehicles in 2017 and has since grown from automobiles to buses. The Dhamrai facility, which is now acknowledged as the biggest private commercial vehicle manufacturing site in Bangladesh, enters a new era with this export.
