May Bangladesh Remain Well Amid the Situation: Barrister Suman

Barrister Suman Produced in Court

On Wednesday morning (17 September), police brought former Member of Parliament Barrister Syedul Haque Suman to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court from jail. He, along with six other accused, was kept in the court lock-up before being presented to the courtroom at around 9:50 AM.

They were taken to the court under strict police protection, wearing handcuffs, helmets, and bulletproof vests.

Case Background

The case is related to the death of Md. Riaz (35), a worker, who was killed during the July movement in Jatrabari. On 28 August, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Shakhawat Hossain of CTTC, applied to show the seven individuals as arrested in this case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman accepted the request and fixed 16 September for the hearing.

Names of the Accused

Apart from Barrister Suman, the others accused in this case are:

  • Former Minister Amir Hossain Amu
  • Hasanul Haq Inu
  • Rashed Khan Menon
  • Anisul Haq
  • Abdur Razzaq
  • Former MP of Jatrabari-5 constituency Kazi Monirul Islam Monu

Courtroom Incident with Food Request

During the hearing, a small incident drew attention. The lawyer of former minister Amir Hossain Amu, Mohsin Reza, requested the court to allow his client to receive sandwiches and dry food. He explained that the elderly politician needed to eat every hour due to his health conditions.

However, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki opposed the request, and the court did not allow the food to be given.

Lawyer Mohsin Reza said:

“আসামিকে এক ঘণ্টা পর পর খাবার খেতে হয়। এজন্য তার পছন্দের খাবার স্যান্ডুইচ ও ড্রাই ফুড আদালতে আনা হয়। কিন্তু আদালত তাকে এই খাবার দেওয়ার অনুমতি দেননি। আসামি একজন বয়স্ক ব্যক্তি, নানান অসুখে জর্জরিত। এজন্য তাকে প্রতিনিয়ত সময় করে খাবার খেতে হয়।”

Translation:
“The accused needs to eat every hour. That is why his preferred food, sandwiches and dry food, was brought to the court. But the court did not allow him to receive it. He is an elderly man, suffering from several health issues, and therefore needs to eat regularly.”

Barrister Suman’s Remark in Court

After the hearing, at around 10:15 AM, the accused were taken back to the court lock-up under heavy security. At this time, Barrister Suman made an emotional remark for the country.

He repeatedly said:

“দেশের যে পরিস্থিতি, ভালো থাকুক বাংলাদেশ। ভালো থাকুক বাংলাদেশ।”

Translation:
“Considering the current situation of the country, may Bangladesh remain well. May Bangladesh remain well.”

While Suman continued repeating this statement, the other accused kept their heads down and remained silent.

Case Allegations

According to the case documents, on 5 August, the final day of the July movement, Riaz was shot dead in front of Jatrabari Police Station. Following his death, a case was filed at Jatrabari Police Station.

Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki confirmed this information to the media.
