Attack Incident in New York
After arriving in the United States, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain was attacked in New York. Eggs were thrown at him, and he was verbally abused.
New York Police arrested Mizanur Rahman, a leader of Bangladesh’s Jubo League whose activities are banned in the U.S., in connection with the attack. He is from Sylhet, Bangladesh.
The arrest happened on Monday at 9:28 pm local time in the Jackson Heights area. Police handcuffed him during the arrest.
NCP Response to the Attack
Early Tuesday morning (Bangladesh time), NCP Joint Convener Dr. Tasnim Zara posted about the incident on Facebook:
‘আজ যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে পৌঁছানোর পর আমাদের দলের সদস্য সচিব আখতার হোসেনের ওপর হামলা হয়েছে। তাঁকে লক্ষ্য করে ডিম ছোড়া হয়েছে, গালিগালাজ করা হয়েছে।’
Translation: “After arriving in the United States, our party’s Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain was attacked. Eggs were thrown at him, and verbal abuse took place.”

Dr. Tasnim Zara further wrote:
‘এটি ব্যক্তি আখতার হোসেনের ওপর আক্রমণ নয়, তাঁর রাজনৈতিক পরিচয়ের কারণে করা হয়েছে। কারণ তিনি প্রতিনিধিত্ব করেন সেই দলকে, যে দল ফ্যাসিবাদের কাঠামো ভেঙে দিতে প্রতিনিয়ত কাজ করছে।’
Translation: “This is not an attack on Akhtar Hossain as an individual, but because of his political identity. He represents a party that constantly works to dismantle the structure of fascism.”
He added:
‘এই হামলা স্পষ্ট করে দেখিয়ে দিলো যে পরাজিত শক্তির ভয় ও হতাশা কতটা গভীর। আমি নিশ্চিত এই আক্রমণ আখতার হোসেনকে এক বিন্দুও দুর্বল করবে না, তাঁর দৃঢ়তা আরও বাড়িয়ে দিবে।’
Translation: “This attack clearly shows how deep the fear and frustration of defeated forces are. I am sure this attack will not weaken Akhtar Hossain even a bit; it will only strengthen his resolve.”
Akhtar Hossain’s Statement
In response to the attack, Akhtar Hossain said:
‘আমরা সেই প্রজন্ম যারা হাসিনার গুলির সামনে দাঁড়াতে ভয় পাইনি। অতএব, কারও ভাঙা ডিমে আমাদের কিছু যায়-আসে না।’
Translation: “We are the generation that did not fear bullets from Hasina. Therefore, broken eggs by anyone cannot affect us.”
Later, while speaking to journalists at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan, he added:
‘আমরা মনে করি, আওয়ামী লীগ বাংলাদেশের মানুষের ওপর সন্ত্রাস করতে পারে — কিন্তু তা শুধু বাংলাদেশেই সীমাবদ্ধ থাকবে। এই দেশের মানুষ তার সাহসের সর্বোচ্চটা দিয়ে অতীতেও আওয়ামী লীগের বিরুদ্ধে জীবন উৎসর্গ করতে দ্বিধা করেনি। সামনের দিনে ও তারা ঐক্যবদ্ধ হয়ে আওয়ামী লীগের সন্ত্রাস প্রতিহত করবে। বাংলাদেশে বিচারহীনভাবে সন্ত্রাস চালিয়ে আর কখনো আওয়ামী লীগ ফিরে আসতে পারবে না।’
Translation: “We believe the Awami League can commit acts of terror against the people of Bangladesh — but it will be limited to Bangladesh. The people of this country have never hesitated to give their lives against Awami League in the past. In the future, they will unite and resist Awami League’s terror. By committing lawless violence, the Awami League will never return to power in Bangladesh.”
