Fake Blood Exposed

In Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, a shocking crime has come to light. Some private blood banks are mixing saline with blood and selling it to patients. Instead of saving lives, this fake blood can become deadly for patients who need real blood.

A bag of such poor-quality blood is being sold at prices between Tk 3,000 to Tk 10,000.

Test Results Show Saline Instead of Blood

To verify the quality, a bag of “O Negative” blood was bought for Tk 5,500 from Safe Blood Bank at Green Road. The blood was tested at the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH). The result showed the bag had more saline than blood.

Professor Farhana Islam, former head of the Blood Transfusion Department at NICRH, said

Translation: “This is saline. Saline has been mixed. One bag has been turned into at least two bags. This bag has been made with saline.”

Not Just One Case

The problem is not limited to one blood bank. At the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, the family of a patient bought two bags of “A Positive” blood from Bangladesh Blood Bank and Transfusion Center. When tested, the blood was declared unfit for use.

An official of the hospital said:

Translation: “After checking the blood, we thought this blood cannot be used.”

Blood Collected for Patients Sold in the Market

After the Milestone School and College plane crash incident, blood was collected for the injured. But instead of giving it to the victims, allegations were raised against Rhythm Blood Bank for selling the collected blood outside for Tk 1,500–1,800 per bag.

A donor expressed his frustration:

Translation: “We did not donate this blood for selling. We gave it to save someone’s life.”

Authorities Respond

When asked, Abu Hossain Md. Moinul Ahsan, Director of Hospitals and Clinics at the Health Directorate, said:

Translation: “We never allowed any chance of business or fraud with Milestone victims. I will collect the information from you. If such evidence exists, strict action will definitely be taken.”

Law Ignored by Many Blood Banks

Dhaka has nearly a hundred private blood banks. Most of them are not following the Safe Blood Transfusion Act 2008, which was made to ensure patients receive safe and pure blood.
