Criticism of Interim Government and Constitution
After the mass uprising, poet and thinker Farhad Mazhar criticized the interim government for keeping the constitution and bureaucracy of the fallen government. Speaking at a discussion titled “Fascist State System and Elections” organized by the Center for Democracy and Peace Studies at the National Press Club, he said:
“রাষ্ট্র মানে কিন্তু গ্রামীণ ব্যাংক চালানো নয়।”
Translation: “State is not about running Grameen Bank.”
Mazhar emphasized that until the fascist state system is removed, talking about elections has no meaning. Addressing the chief adviser, he said:
“আপনি তো গণ-অভ্যুত্থানের মধ্য দিয়ে এসেছেন, আপনি গণ-অভ্যুত্থানের কেউ নন। আমি আবারও বলছি এখানে ভুল বোঝার কোনো অপশন নেই। তিনি গণ-অভ্যুত্থানের কেউ নন। এখানে যারা বসে আছেন, তারা অনেকে সরাসরি গণ-অভ্যুত্থানে রাস্তায় ছিলেন, বুক পেতে দিয়েছেন। আমরা বছরের পর নির্যাতিত হয়েছি। আমাদের কথা বলতে দেওয়া হয়নি।”
Translation: “You came through the mass uprising, but you are not a participant of the uprising. I repeat, there is no room for misunderstanding. You are not part of the uprising. Many of those sitting here were directly on the streets, facing the struggles. We were oppressed for years and were not allowed to speak.”
Concerns About Election Success
Mazhar questioned the basis on which elections were being planned:
“এত বড় আত্মত্যাগের পরে আপনি কিসের ভিত্তিতে নির্বাচনের কথা শুরু করলেন?”
Translation: “After such huge sacrifices, on what basis have you started talking about elections?”

He warned that the country could face disaster if elections are held under current circumstances:
“সফল নির্বাচনের কোনো লক্ষণ দেখছি না। আপনি কিসের ভিত্তিতে নির্বাচন দিচ্ছেন? দেশকে বিপর্যয়ের দিকে ফেলে দেবেন না। আপনার যে জনপ্রিয়তার হ্রাস হয়েছে, এটা আমাদের জন্য বিপজ্জনক। আমরা অত্যন্ত উদ্বিগ্ন।”
Translation: “I see no signs of a successful election. On what basis are you holding elections? Do not push the country toward disaster. Your drop in popularity is dangerous for us. We are very concerned.”
Political Parties and Bureaucracy Critique
Mazhar criticized the state of political parties in Bangladesh:
“বাংলাদেশে রাজনৈতিক দল বলে কিছু নেই। রাজনৈতিক দল মানে যারা জনগণের সেবা করে, জাতিকে যারা পথ দেখায়, নতুন কথা বলে। এখানে যেটা আছে, সেটা লুটেরা শ্রেণি, দুর্নীতিবাজ। তাদের সঙ্গে আপনি কথা বলেছেন, জনগণের সঙ্গে কথা বলতে বলেননি।”
Translation: “There are no real political parties in Bangladesh. Political parties are supposed to serve people, guide the nation, and bring new ideas. Here, what exists are looters and corrupt people. You have talked to them, but not to the people.”
He also criticized taking the oath under Sheikh Hasina’s constitution:
“আপনি একটা অবৈধ সরকার। তবে অবৈধ সরকার বলার মানে এই না যে আপনাকে আমরা চাই না। এর মানে হচ্ছে, আপনার প্রথম কাজ নিজের বৈধতা নিশ্চিত করা।”
Translation: “You are an illegal government. But saying illegal doesn’t mean we don’t want you. It means your first task is to ensure your legitimacy.”

Youth and Ministries
Mazhar acknowledged that some young students were taken into ministries but said:
“তরুণেরা দেশ চালাবে, এটাই তো স্বপ্ন। কিন্তু তরুণদের মধ্যে বিভক্তি তৈরি করা হয়েছে। কারণ, শেখ হাসিনার আমলাতন্ত্র রয়ে গেছে।”
Translation: “The youth will run the country, that is the dream. But divisions have been created among them because Sheikh Hasina’s bureaucracy still remains.”

The discussion was moderated by Sadek Rahman, Executive Director of the Center for Democracy and Peace Studies. Other speakers included former secretary and diplomat Abdullah Al Mamun, lawyer Abu Hena Razzak, and Justice Party Chairman Abul Kashem Mazumdar.
