Bangladesh has banned polythene bags in fresh markets starting today. This ban follows a similar restriction in supermarkets that began on October 1, leading many to switch to eco-friendly options like jute, paper, and cloth bags. Fresh market vendors now have one month to adopt these sustainable alternatives.
The government is also cracking down on illegal polythene production to support this shift. Many consumers and environmentalists welcome the change, but some vendors worry about the higher cost of eco-friendly bags. To help, the government is providing subsidies for these materials and launching campaigns to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags.
Market associations are assisting vendors in the transition to sustainable packaging. Despite some challenges, this ban marks an important step toward a cleaner and greener Bangladesh.
