BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has opened up to the media after nearly two decades. In the first part of an interview published on BBC Bangla on Monday (September 6), he spoke candidly about contemporary politics, his silence, plans to return to the country and recent movements.
Reasons for staying away from the media
When asked about the reasons for not facing the media in the past, Tarique Rahman said,
ব্যাপারটি আসলে এমন নয়। আমি গণমাধ্যমের মুখোমুখি হয়েছি। আমি দীর্ঘ ১৭ বছর এই দেশে (যুক্তরাজ্যে) আছি। তবে আমার ওপর যখন দলের দায়িত্ব এসে পড়েছে তারপর থেকে আমি গ্রামে-গঞ্জে আমার নেতাকর্মীসহ বিভিন্ন পর্যায়ে সাধারণ মানুষ যখন যেভাবে অংশগ্রহণ করেছে আমি সকলের সাথে কথা বলেছি। বিগত স্বৈরাচার সরকারের সময় কোর্ট থেকে একটি আদেশ দিয়ে আমার কথা বলার অধিকারকে বন্ধ করে দেয়া হয়েছিল। আমি যদি গণমাধ্যমে কিছু বলতে চাইতাম হয়তো গণমাধ্যমের ইচ্ছা ছিল সেটি ছাপানোর কিন্তু গণমাধ্যম তা পারতো না। আমি একদিন প্রেসক্লাবে কথা বলেছিলাম। পরেরদিন দেখলাম তখনকার প্রেসক্লাবের যারা সদস্য বা কমিটিতে ছিলেন তারা তখন আমাকে মিটিং করে আইনের দৃষ্টিতে ফেরারি বলেছিলেন। এভাবে তারা আমার কথা বন্ধ করে রাখার চেষ্টা করেছিল। আমি চেষ্টা করেছি সামাজিক মাধ্যমসহ বিভিন্ন পন্থায় আমি পৌঁছানোর চেষ্টা করেছি। আমি পৌঁছিয়েছিও। গণমাধ্যমে যে আমি কথা বলেছি তা নয়। আমি কথা বলেছি হয়তো আপনারা তখন নিতে পারেননি অথব শুনতে পারেননি। ইচ্ছা থাকলেও ছাপাতে পারেননি। আমি কথা বলেছি থেমে থাকিনি।
Translation: The matter is not like this. I have faced the media. I have been in this country (UK) for 17 years. However, since the responsibility of the party has fallen on me, I have spoken to everyone, including my leaders and activists, in the villages and towns, as the common people participated at various levels. During the previous authoritarian government, my right to speak was stopped by a court order. If I had wanted to say something to the media, the media might have wanted to print it, but the media could not. I spoke at the Press Club one day. The next day, I saw that the members or committee members of the Press Club at that time held a meeting and told me to flee in the eyes of the law. In this way, they tried to stop me from speaking. I tried to reach out through various means, including social media. I did reach out. It is not that I spoke to the media. You may not have been able to receive or listen to what I spoke at that time. Even if you wanted to, you could not print it. I spoke and did not stop.
What He reply on presenter’s question
The presenter asked,
বাংলাদেশে গণঅভ্যুত্থানের এক বছর পেরিয়ে গেছে। অনেকের ধারণা ছিল আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের পতনের পর আপনি দেশে এসে স্বশরীরে দলের নেতৃত্ব দেবেন। আপনি এখনও দেশে ফেরেননি কেন?
Translation: “It has been a year since the mass uprising in Bangladesh. Many people thought that after the fall of the Awami League government, you would come back to the country and lead the party in person. Why haven’t you returned to the country yet?”
In response, Tarique Rahman said,
কিছু সঙ্গত কারণে হয়তো ফেরাটা এখনও হয়ে উঠেনি এখনও। তবে সময় তো চলে এসেছে মনে হয়। ইনশাআল্লাহ দ্রুতই ফিরে আসবো।
Translation: “Maybe for some good reason, the return has not happened yet. But it seems that the time has come. Insha Allah, I will return soon.”
When asked when he will return, he said, “Soon.”
In response to the question of whether he will return to the country before the election, he said,
রাজনীতি যেহেতু করি, আমি একজন রাজনীতিবিদ হিসেবে চাইবো এটাই স্বাভাবিক। নির্বাচনের সাথে রাজনৈতিক দল এবং রাজনৈতিক কর্মীর সম্পর্ক ওতপ্রোতভাবে জড়িত। কাজেই যেখানে একটি জনগণের প্রত্যাশিত নির্বাচন হবে সেই সময়ে কেমন করে দূরে থাকবো। আমার সর্বোচ্চ চেষ্টা, ইচ্ছা, আগ্রহ থাকবে প্রত্যাশিত নির্বাচনে জনগণের পাশেই থাকবো।
Translation: “Since I do politics, it is natural for me as a politician to want to. The relationship between political parties and political workers is closely related to elections. So, how can I stay away at a time when there is an election that the people are expecting? I will try my best, want, and be by the side of the people in the expected election.”

When asked by the presenter whether Tarique Rahman was in security fear, the BNP leader said,
বিভিন্ন রকম শঙ্কার কথা আমরা শুনেছি। বিভিন্ন মাধ্যমে তা মিডিয়াতেও প্রকাশ হয়েছে।
Translation: “We have heard about various fears. It has also been published in the media through various means.”
Almost all parties admit that you had an active role in the July uprising. Some in the BNP consider you the sole mastermind of the uprising. When asked about Tarique Rahman’s opinion on this matter, he said,
জুলাই আন্দোলনে আমি আমাকে কখনোই মাস্টারমাইন্ড হিসেবে দেখি না। ৫ আগস্ট জুলাই আন্দোলন নামে যেটি সকলের কাছে গৃহীত, এই আন্দোলন সফল হয়েছে জুলাই মাসে কিন্তু এর প্রেক্ষাপট শুরু হয়েছে বহু বছর আগে। এই আন্দোলনে বাংলাদেশের গণতান্ত্রিক রাজনৈতিক নেতাকর্মীরা, বিএনপি হোক বা অন্য দল হোক, প্রত্যেকটি রাজনৈতিক দল বিভিন্নভাবে অবদান রেখেছে। বিভিন্নভাবে তাদের নেতাকর্মীরা নির্যাতিত হয়েছে। আমি মনে করি জনগণ জুলাই আগস্ট মাসে এসে সকল রাজনৈতিক দলের সাথে অংশগ্রহণ করেছে। শুধু কী রাজনৈতিক দলের নেতারাই সেদিন ছিল? অবশ্যই নয়। সেদিন মাদরাসার ছাত্ররা ছিলেন, গৃহিণীরা পর্যন্ত রাস্তায় নেমে এসেছিলেন সন্তানের পেছনে। কৃষক, শ্রমিক, সিএনজি চালক, দোকানদার, গার্মেন্টসকর্মীসহ সবাই রাস্তায় নেমে এসেছিলেন। সামরিক বাহিনীর অবসরপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা কর্মচারীরাও নেমে এসেছিলেন। অনেক সাংবাদিক যারা স্বৈরাচারের অত্যাচারে দেশ থেকে বাইরে চলে যেতে বাধ্য হয়েছিলেন তারা সম্পৃক্ত হয়েছিলেন। কারোর ভূমিকাকে আমরা ছোট করে দেখতে চাই না। আমি দৃঢ়ভাবে বিশ্বাস করি সমাজের দল মত নির্বিশেষে সমাজের প্রত্যেকটি মানুষের অবদান রয়েছে। এই আন্দোলন ছিল বাংলাদেশের জনগণের আন্দোলন। যারা গণতন্ত্রে বিশ্বাস করে। এই আন্দোলনের মাস্টারমাইন্ড কোনো দল বা ব্যক্তি নয়, এই আন্দোলনের মাস্টারমাইন্ড বাংলাদেশের গণতন্ত্রকামী জনগণ।
Translation: “I never see myself as the mastermind in the July movement. The August 5 July movement, which is accepted by everyone, was successful in July, but its background began many years ago. In this movement, democratic political leaders and activists of Bangladesh, be it BNP or other parties, each political party has contributed in different ways. Their leaders and activists have been persecuted in different ways. I think the people came and participated with all political parties in July and August. Were only the leaders of political parties there that day? Of course not. That day, there were madrasa students, even housewives who came out on the streets to support their children. Farmers, workers, CNG drivers, shopkeepers, garment workers, everyone came out on the streets. Retired military officers and employees also came down. Many journalists who were forced to leave the country due to the tyranny of the dictatorship got involved. We do not want to belittle anyone’s role. I firmly believe that every person in society, regardless of their party or opinion, has a contribution to make. This movement was a movement of the people of Bangladesh. Those who believe in democracy. The mastermind of this movement is not any party or individual, the mastermind of this movement is the democracy-loving people of Bangladesh.
নতুন কাস্টমার আনতে চাইলে এই স্ট্র্যাটেজি মিস করবেন না
Regarding the level of contact with the student leadership during the movement, he said,
আমি যেহেতু বাইরে থেকে কাজ করছি আমাকে অনলাইনের মাধ্যমে যোগাযোগ রাখতে হয়েছে। সেই দিনগুলো আপনাদের মনে আছে টেলিফোন ও অনলাইন সিস্টেমের কী অবস্থা করে রাখা হয়েছিল। যোগাযোগ প্রত্যক্ষ, পরোক্ষ বিভিন্ন মাধ্যমে করতে হয়েছে। এটি যে সবসময় খুব মসৃণ ছিল এমন নয়। প্রত্যেকে প্রত্যেককে সহযোগীতা করেছে বলেও জানান বিএনপির এই শীর্ষ নেতা।
Translation: “Since I was working from outside, I had to keep in touch online. You remember the state of the telephone and online systems in those days. Communication had to be done through various direct and indirect channels. It was not always smooth. Everyone cooperated with everyone, said the top BNP leader.
