In a captivating display of skill and creativity, Dhaka’s own Jubair Kaolin recently captured a stunning image of the Orion Nebula from his rooftop, proving that even city lights can’t dim the wonders of the night sky. Jubair’s achievement is particularly unique because he used a telescope he built himself, designed with a 900mm focal length and f/8.8 focal ratio, to take this detailed image.
Over 4.5 hours, Jubair patiently photographed the nebula, using a dual narrowband filter to overcome the challenges of light pollution. This filter let him capture vivid details and colors, which would usually be lost against the glow of Dhaka’s urban lights. Ensuring a stable and accurate shot was essential, so Jubair used an iOptron CEM40G mount to keep his telescope perfectly aligned as he tracked the nebula’s position in the sky. To capture the fine details, he paired the telescope with a QHY268C cooled astronomy camera, specifically made for photographing faint objects in space.
Jubair’s passion and dedication are not only impressive but also inspiring for the growing community of astronomy lovers in Bangladesh. His work shows that, with the right equipment and a bit of patience, even city-dwellers can connect with the beauty of the universe. For those looking to explore astrophotography, Jubair’s efforts are a reminder that you don’t need to venture far from home to capture something extraordinary in the night sky.
