Repeated Power Cuts During Speeches
Sarjis Alam, the northern chief organizer of the National Citizen Party (NCP), claimed that electricity goes off every time he starts speaking at political programs — and comes back as soon as he finishes.
“প্রোগ্রামের আগে-পরে নয়, অন্য কারও বক্তব্যের সময় নয়; ঠিক আমি যখন কথা বলা শুরু করি তখনই বিদ্যুৎ চলে যায়। কথা শেষ হলে বিদ্যুৎ চলে আসে। সব মিডিয়া এর সাক্ষী।”
Translation: Not before or after the program, not during anyone else’s speech — exactly when I start speaking, the power goes out. And it comes back as soon as I finish. All media witnessed this.
He shared the statement on his verified Facebook page on Sunday evening (October 12).
Sarjis Explains His Viral Angry Comment
Earlier, a video of Sarjis Alam went viral where he angrily said:
“এই রাজনৈতিক দেউলিয়াদের আমরা দেখে নিব তাদের কলিজা কত বড় হইছে। কলিজা ছিঁড়ে রাস্তায় ফেলে রাখবো।”
Translation: We will see how big these political bankrupts’ hearts are — I’ll tear them apart and throw them on the street.
The comment came after a sudden power cut during his speech. Now, Sarjis has clarified his position, saying the repeated disruptions made him suspicious.
“বিগত এক মাসে পঞ্চগড় জেলায় এনসিপি তিনটি প্রোগ্রাম আয়োজন করেছে… প্রতিটি প্রোগ্রামে যখন আমি বক্তব্য দিতে শুরু করি, তার এক-দুই মিনিট পরই বিদ্যুৎ চলে যায়।”
Translation: In the past month, NCP arranged three programs in Panchagarh. In each program, one or two minutes after I started speaking, the electricity went off.
“I Believe It’s Intentional”
Sarjis said he initially ignored the first two incidents, but after it happened a third time, he began to believe it was done on purpose.
“তিনটি প্রোগ্রাম তিন দিন ভিন্ন সময়ে হয়েছে। তারপরও যখন এই ধরনের ঘটনা ঘটে, তখন আমি অবশ্যই মনে করি এটা উদ্দেশ্যপ্রণোদিত।”
Translation: These three programs were held on three different days. Even then, when this kept happening, I definitely believe it was intentional.
He accused some local officials of acting as “political agents” for other parties.
“জেলা পর্যায়ে বিভিন্ন সেক্টরের কিছু কর্মকর্তা এই ধরনের ছোটলোকি কিংবা অন্য দলের দালালিমূলক আচরণ করে থাকে।”
Translation: Some district-level officials behave like low-minded people or agents of other parties.

Regret Over Harsh Language
Sarjis admitted that his earlier words were too harsh, though he said they came out of frustration.
“ক্ষোভ ঝাড়তে গিয়ে যে উপমা ব্যবহার করেছি, সেটা করা উচিত হয়নি বলে মনে করি।”
Translation: I think the expression I used out of anger was not appropriate.
He also mentioned that the electricity office was informed before every event, yet the same issue continued.
“প্রত্যেকবারই প্রোগ্রামের আগে তাদেরকে জানানো হয়েছে… কিন্তু তারপরও যখন একই চিত্র দেখা যায়, তখন তাদের সঙ্গে সুশীলতা প্রদর্শন করা প্রয়োজন মনে করি না।”
Translation: Every time, the electricity office was informed before the event, but when the same thing happens again and again, I don’t see the need to remain polite with them.

Focus on Anti-Corruption Campaign
Finally, Sarjis reminded the media about NCP’s anti-corruption and public awareness campaign in Panchagarh, saying the focus should not only be on the controversy.
“চাঁদাবাজি, দখলদারিত্ব, সিন্ডিকেট, দুর্নীতি ও মাদক ব্যবসার বিরুদ্ধে এনসিপির পক্ষ থেকে লং মার্চে… ১৫০ কিলোমিটার অতিক্রম করেছি। আশা করি, মিডিয়ার ফোকাস সেদিকেও থাকবে।”
Translation: From NCP’s side, we marched 150 kilometers across Panchagarh on motorcycles for 10 hours against extortion, land grabbing, syndicates, corruption, and drug trade. I hope the media will focus on that too.
