Incident Details
A second-year medical student from Odisha was gang-raped in Durgapur while she was out with a friend on Friday night. Police are currently investigating the case.
Speaking at a briefing, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised questions about the victim being out at 12:30 AM:
“তিনি (ধর্ষিতা) একটি বেসরকারি মেডিকেল কলেজে পড়াশোনা করছিলেন। এটি কার দায়দায়িত্ব? কীভাবে তিনি রাত সাড়ে ১২টার সময় বের হলেন?”
Translation: “She (the victim) was studying at a private medical college. Whose responsibility is this? How did she go out at 12:30 at night?”

She also said that private medical colleges should monitor their students, especially at night, as the area is near a forest zone:
“বেসরকারি মেডিকেলকে তাদের শিক্ষার্থীদের নজরে রাখতে হবে। রাতের কালচার দেখতে হবে। শিক্ষার্থীদের রাতের বেলা বের হতে দেওয়া উচিত নয়। এটি একটি বনাঞ্চল। তাদের নিজেদের রক্ষা করতে হবে।”
Translation: “Private medical colleges need to keep an eye on their students. They should check the night culture. Students should not be allowed to go out at night. This is a forested area. They need to protect themselves.”
Political Reactions
The BJP criticized Mamata Banerjee’s comments, accusing her of shaming the victim instead of taking strict action against the perpetrators.
“লজ্জাহীন মমতা নারীত্বের এক কলঙ্ক। মুখ্যমন্ত্রী হিসেবেও তিনি কলঙ্ক। আরজি কর এবং সন্দেশখালীর পর এ ঘটনায়ও বিচারের বদলে ভিক্টিমকে দোষারোপ করছেন মমতা।” – BJP Spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia
Translation: “Shameless Mamata is a disgrace to womanhood. Even as Chief Minister, she is a disgrace. After RG Kar and Sandeshkhali, she is blaming the victim instead of ensuring justice in this case too.”
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala added:
“পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মেয়েদের দোষারোপ করে আর ধর্ষকদের বাঁচায়।”
Translation: “The Chief Minister of West Bengal blames girls and protects the rapists.”
“ফেসবুক, হোয়াটসঅ্যাপ, ইনস্টাগ্রাম—আজই শিখে ফেলুন ৫০ টাকায় ৫০ হাজার মানুষের কাছে পৌঁছে যাওয়ার গোপন কৌশল!”

Mamata Banerjee also compared with other states:
“ওড়িশায়, মেয়েরা সমুদ্র সৈকতে ধর্ষণের শিকার হয়েছিল। ওড়িশা সরকার কী ব্যবস্থা নিয়েছে?”
Translation: “In Odisha, girls were raped on the seaside. What measures has the Odisha government taken?”
She assured that strict action will be taken against all involved in this Durgapur case and highlighted that similar crimes occur in Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha.
