Bangladesh to Join Fourth Submarine Cable

Bangladesh is currently in talks with Singapore to join the fourth submarine cable network, said Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on Posts, Telecommunications, and ICT.

“We have expressed our interest to the Singapore government regarding the establishment of the fourth submarine cable, and they have assured us of their cooperation.”

He shared the information during a briefing at the ICT Division conference room in Agargaon, Dhaka. Taiyeb mentioned that the matter has already been conveyed to the Singapore embassy and relevant ministries.

Third Submarine Cable to Start by 2026

The third submarine cable, which has a capacity of 17,000 Gbps, is expected to begin commercial operation by mid or late 2026.

“We have already finalised the agreement for Bangladesh’s part in this third cable.”

He noted that this new connection will significantly improve data capacity and internet speed across the country.

Cable Route Challenges Due to Regional Conflict

Taiyeb explained that due to Houthi insurgency, permission to lay cables through certain sea routes has been restricted.

“For the first time, a portion of the submarine cable will be laid as a terrestrial cable, passing over Saudi Arabia’s desert before reaching the Red Sea.”

This adjustment aims to ensure safe and uninterrupted connectivity despite regional instability.

Project Background and Cost Increase

The third submarine cable project, launched in 2021, is designed to connect Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) to Singapore on one end and France on the other. Through this system, Bangladesh will gain direct data connectivity with Singapore, India, Djibouti, and France.

Initially estimated at Tk 693 crore, the project’s cost has now increased by Tk 230.51 crore due to implementation delays. It was originally planned to be completed by June 2024, but the deadline has been extended to June this year.
