A Violent Clash at Parliament Area

A violent clash broke out on Friday near the National Parliament area in Dhaka between police and protesters who called themselves “July Fighters.” During the chaos, one protester, Atikul Islam (Atikul Gazi), was injured. He lost one of his hands earlier in life and now uses an artificial arm — which he claims was broken by police during the incident.

Translation: “I don’t have one of my hands — it’s an artificial hand. They (the police) hit and broke even that.”

Atikul spoke in pain after being beaten near the National Parliament area. He and several others were protesting to demand recognition for their movement and had announced they would not allow the ‘July National Certificate 2025’ to be signed unless their demands were met.

Protest Turns Violent

The protesters had gathered near the Parliament building since Thursday night. On Friday morning, they crossed the wall and entered the main area where the July Certificate signing event was scheduled. When they refused to leave despite requests from officials and police, law enforcement forcibly removed them.

Soon after, at the South Plaza of the Parliament, tensions escalated. Protesters clashed with police at Manik Mia Avenue, setting vehicles on fire and damaging police buses. The confrontation lasted nearly two hours before rain helped calm the situation.

Injuries and Hospital Treatment

At least 27 people, including both protesters and police officers, were injured during the clash.
Atikul Islam was among them. After receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he said:

Translation: “The doctor prescribed medicine and did an X-ray. They said no bone is broken, but it’s slightly dislocated. I took the treatment and came home to rest for a while.”

Atikul Blames the Police

Atikul claimed that members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) attacked him and others first.

Translation: “We surrounded the Parliament area for our fair demands, but they attacked us first.”
