Cats as ‘Employees’: A Unique Work Environment at Qunot Inc. in Tokyo

At Qunot Inc. in Tokyo’s Suginami Ward, a unique and effective work culture is thriving, where not only humans but also a few cats work regularly in the office. These cats do not attend meetings or projects but play a vital role in improving employees’ mood and reducing work stress. Imagine working on a busy task while a pet cat curls up on your desk—this scene alone seems to melt away the stress of the day.

This is not a fantasy, but a real scenario. In 2004, a year after Qunot’s establishment, the company’s four founders had lunch at a sushi restaurant, where they were offered the chance to adopt a kitten. They decided that bringing a cat to the office would be a fun idea. Initially, the cats created some disruption, such as jumping onto keyboards, but now, with the use of laptops, this issue is no longer a problem.

Employees have said that the cats’ presence is not just fun but also an effective way to alleviate work pressure. They help maintain a balance in the office, especially when the workload gets overwhelming. One employee, Miyamoto, shared, “The cats serve as a kind of ‘refresh’ button during work breaks. When I’m tired, playing with them helps clear my mind, and I feel reinvigorated.”

The cats at Qunot Inc. have become an integral part of the office, contributing to a relaxed and peaceful work environment that enhances both productivity and focus.
