A Chinese young man named Wang Tao has come to Bangladesh from faraway China in search of love. His online love affair with Surma Akhter, a young woman from Konapara village in Kunda union of Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria, is now going to be consummated. The girl’s family has said that their marriage will be completed in Muslim customs at the District Judge’s Court tomorrow (Sunday).

Started online, married in reality

It is learned that Wang Tao and Surma Akhter met through an app called ‘Wall Talk’ a month and a half ago. Gradually, a love affair developed between them. Later, with the consent of both families, the Chinese young man came to Bangladesh. As soon as this news spread, there was a huge sensation in the area and villagers flocked to see him.

Family consent and religious formalities

Surma, daughter of Taher Mia of Konapara village in Kunda union of Brahmanbaria, works in a private organization. Chinese young man Wang Tao is the son of Wang Yichang Chao from Hunan province. The girl’s family has claimed that their marriage will be completed in the District Judge’s Court tomorrow through a notary public in accordance with Muslim customs. The girl’s grandmother, Halima Akhter, said,

‘আমার নাতনির ভালোবাসা পেতে সে চীন থেকে চলে এসেছে। ওই যুবক কোনো ধর্ম বিশ্বাস করে না। তবে নাতনিকে বিয়ে করতে হলে সে ইসলাম ধর্ম গ্রহণ করবে। আগামী রোববার ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়া জেলা জজ আদালতে মুসলিম রীতি মেনে সুরমাকে বিয়ে করবে। এতে দুই পরিবারেরই সম্মতি রয়েছে। আমরা খুব আনন্দিত।’
Translation: “He came from China to get my granddaughter’s love. The young man does not believe in any religion. However, if he wants to marry his granddaughter, he will convert to Islam. Next Sunday, Surma will marry him according to Muslim customs at the Brahmanbaria District Judge’s Court. Both families have agreed to this. We are very happy.”

Chinese youth welcomed and police presence

Surma’s relatives welcomed Wang Tao from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka last night (October 31) and brought him to their home. Nasirnagar Police Station Deputy Inspector and Kunda Union Beat Officer Md. Jahan-e-Alam said,

‘চীনা যুবক নাসিরনগরে আসার খবর পেয়ে আমরা ঘটনাস্থলে যাই। তার পাসপোর্ট দেখে নিশ্চিত হই তিনি চীনের নাগরিক। আমরা শুনেছি, আগামীকাল আদালতে তাদের বিয়ে হবে।’
Translation: “We went to the scene after receiving news of the Chinese youth’s arrival in Nasirnagar. We confirmed by looking at his passport that he is a Chinese citizen. We heard that they will be married in court tomorrow.”

Kunda Union Parishad Chairman Advocate Nasir Uddin Bhuiyan said,

‘দুপুরে কিছু লোকের মাধ্যমে একজন চীনা নাগরিক আসার খবর পেয়েছি। তাকে ঘিরে গ্রামের মানুষের মধ্যে কৌতূহল বিরাজ করছে।’
Translation: “I received news of a Chinese national arriving through some people in the afternoon. There is curiosity among the villagers about him.”
