Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has officially launched a program to provide monthly allowances to religious leaders across the country. The program was inaugurated on Saturday (March 14) at 10:00 AM at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.
Under this initiative, mosque imams, muezzins, and khadems will receive monthly financial support. Leaders from other religious institutions, including Hindu temples, Buddhist monasteries, and Christian churches, will also receive allowances.
Part of Government’s Election Commitment
The government said this initiative is part of its election promises. The program aims to support religious leaders who serve different communities across the country.
According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the project will initially cover 4,908 mosques, 990 temples, 144 Buddhist monasteries, and 396 churches.
Allowance Structure Under Pilot Project
Under the pilot project, each mosque will receive 10,000 taka every month. From this amount:

  • Imam will receive 5,000 taka
  • Muezzin will receive 3,000 taka
  • Khadem will receive 2,000 taka

Each temple will receive 8,000 taka, where the priest will get 5,000 taka and the caretaker (Sebayet) will receive 3,000 taka.
For each Buddhist monastery, 8,000 taka will be allocated. The head monk will receive 5,000 taka, while the assistant will get 3,000 taka.
Similarly, each Christian church will receive 8,000 taka, with 5,000 taka for the pastor or priest and 3,000 taka for the assistant pastor.
Government’s Aim
The government hopes that this program will provide financial support to religious leaders and strengthen the management of religious institutions across the country. Officials said the initiative will help recognize the contribution of religious leaders who serve different communities.
