RAB Officer Among Five Arrested in Patiya with 60,000 Yaba Pills Worth Tk 1.8 Crore

RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) has arrested five people, including an official of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), from a checkpoint in Patiya, Chattogram, seizing 60,000 yaba tablets and around Tk 250,000 in cash. The arrests took place last Saturday.

The arrested DNC official has been identified as Md Abdullah Al Mamun (41), an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) at the DNC’s Patiya Mujaffarabad office under the Chattogram ‘B’ Circle. He is the son of Md Abdul Matin from Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station area.

According to RAB, while patrolling in the Patiya area, they received information that a large consignment of yaba pills was being transported from Cox’s Bazar to Chattogram in two microbuses.

Acting on the tip-off, RAB set up a checkpoint near the Kader LPG Filling Station in the Khurana area along the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway. Upon spotting the checkpoint, the suspects tried to flee, but RAB managed to stop one microbus and later intercepted the other.

During the search, 10 yaba tablets, a walkie-talkie set, DNC-branded coat and cap, and Tk 243,515 in cash were found in Abdullah Al Mamun’s possession and inside his vehicle. The remaining yaba tablets were recovered from beneath the driver’s seat of the second microbus.

The other arrestees are Md Mainuddin (30), son of Md Firoz from Muradnagar in Cumilla; Md Rashedul Alam (38) of East Habibur Para in Patiya Municipality; Md Jasim Uddin (41) of Allai area under the same municipality; and Md Junayed Tanvir Torafdar (29) from Sarishabari in Jamalpur. The driver of one of the microbuses managed to escape.

A case was filed with Patiya Police Station on Sunday regarding the seizure. Alongside the five arrested, the fugitive driver was also named as an accused. According to RAB officials, the recovered yaba tablets have an estimated market value of Tk 18 million (1.8 crore).

Patiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nuruzzaman said that ASI Abdullah Al Mamun has been made the prime accused in the case. The arrested individuals have been sent to jail through the court, and an investigation is underway.

Investigating Officer and Patiya Police Sub-Inspector Pradip Chandra Dey stated that one of the seized microbuses belongs to ASI Abdullah Al Mamun, while the absconding accused is the driver of that vehicle. Police have sought a five-day remand for the arrested individuals for further questioning.
