Shamit Shome confident of victory against India
Bangladesh has yet to win despite playing four matches in the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers. The same is true for the team’s Canadian expatriate midfielder Shamit Shome—he has not won any of his four matches for the national team. So, like Bangladesh, Shomit is also waiting for an elusive victory. Before going to practice on Saturday, he said that the team and its desired victory can be achieved in the upcoming match against India.
Maintaining control in the midfield is the first condition
Shomit believes that maintaining control in the midfield will be the main task in order to get results in the match against India. In addition, we must get out of the negative trend of losing focus and conceding goals towards the end of each match.
In his words,
“হ্যাঁ, মিডফিল্ডের নিয়ন্ত্রণ রাখার ব্যাপারে আমরা আত্মবিশ্বাসী। আমি মনে করি, পুরো দল, গোলকিপার, ডিফেন্স, মিডফিল্ড, স্ট্রাইকিং-সব পজিশনের খেলোয়াড়দের আত্মবিশ্বাস আছে যে, আমরা ম্যাচটা নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে পারব, জিততে পারব। বিগত ম্যাচগুলোতে আমাদের পারফরম্যান্স ভালো হয়েছে, কিন্তু জয়টা পাচ্ছি না। জয়টা আমাদের পাওয়া উচিত। আশা করি, আমরা এবার সেটা পাব।”
Translation: “Yes, we are confident in controlling the midfield. I think the whole team, goalkeeper, defense, midfield, striking – all the players in all positions have confidence that we can control the match, that we can win. We have performed well in the past matches, but we are not getting the win. We should get the win. Hopefully, we will get it this time.”
Battle against India: Old memories and new challenges
The memory of defeating India is quite old for Bangladesh—the red-greens won 2-1 in the SAFF Championship in 2003 with Matiur Munnar’s golden goal. The last time the two teams met was in Shillong last March, where Bangladesh drew 0-0. Although he did not play in that match, Shomit watched from afar; this is his first time playing against India.
While analyzing the opponent, Shomit said,
“ফুটবলে এমন হয় (শেষ দিকে মনোযোগ হারানো), তাই না? আমরা কেবল ভাগ্যেকে পক্ষে পাচ্ছি না। এমনকি নেপালের বিপক্ষে ম্যাচে ওরা যে কর্নার কিক পেয়েছে, ওইটা আসলে মনে হয় অফসাইডও ছিল, তাই না? কিন্তু ফুটবলে এগুলো হয়। জানি না, কী কারণে আমরা মনোযোগ হারাচ্ছি, কিন্তু আশা করি, ভাগ্যকে সামনে পাশে পাব, মনোযোগ হারাব না এবং আমরা যেন ওভাবে গোল হজম না করি। মূল বিষয় হলো, আমাদের মনোযোগ ধরে রাখতে হবে শেষ বাঁশি বাজার আগ পর্যন্ত।”
Translation: “That’s what happens in football (losing focus towards the end), right? We’re not just getting lucky. Even the corner kick they got against Nepal was actually offside, right? But these things happen in football. I don’t know why we’re losing focus, but hopefully we’ll get luck on our side, not lose focus and not concede goals like that. The main thing is to stay focused until the final whistle.”

He also said,
“ভারত ভালো দল, কিন্তু তাদেরও দুর্বলতা আছে। ওদের মিডফিল্ড লাইন ও ডিফেন্স লাইনের মাঝে ফাঁক থাকে, জায়গা থাকতে পারে। আপনারা দেখেছেন, নেপাল যেভাবে ডিফেন্ড করেছে, ভারত মনে হয় এত ভালোভাবে ডিফেন্ড করতে পারবে না, স্ট্রাকচার ওইভাবে রাখতে পারবে না। আমরা ওই জায়গাতে সুযোগটা নিতে পারব।”
Translation: “India is a good team, but they also have weaknesses. There are gaps between their midfield line and defense line, there can be space. You have seen, the way Nepal defended, it seems like India will not be able to defend that well, will not be able to keep the structure that way. We will be able to take advantage of that space.”
He further said,
“জানি, ভারত ভালো দল, আমরাও ভালো দল। এই ম্যাচটার অনেক অর্থ আছে, তাই না? যে দ্বৈরথটা আমাদের মধ্যে আছে, ভালো প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা হবে, কিন্তু আমরা প্রস্তুত থাকব। আশা করি, আমরা জিততে পারব। আমরা ভালো খেলতে পারি, ভালো পারফরম্যান্স দিতে পারি। যে জয়টা খুঁজছি আমরা, এই মঙ্গলবারের ম্যাচে সেটা আশা করি পাব।”
Translation: “I know India are a good team, we are a good team too. This match means a lot, doesn’t it? The rivalry we have, it will be a good competition, but we will be ready. Hopefully, we can win. We can play well, give a good performance. Hopefully, we will get the win that we are looking for, in this Tuesday match.”
Team unity is the key to victory
The Bangladesh team’s rhythm deteriorated after Hamza left the field in the second half of the friendly match against Nepal. There has also been talk that the locals are not able to keep up with the expatriate players. However, Shomit does not agree with this idea.
He firmly said,
“এই অভিযোগের সাথে আমি একমত নই। আমাদের দলটা ১১ জনের, দেশি-বিদেশি কোনো ব্যাপারই নয়, তাই না? কিভাবে জিতব, সেটা বুঝতে আমাদের সবাইকে একসাথে থাকতে হবে। দেশি বনাম বিদেশি খেলোয়াড়-আমরা কোনোদিন এভাবে চিন্তা করিনি। এভাবে বাংলাদেশ জিততে পারবে না। আমাদের সবসময় একসাথে থাকতে হবে।”
Translation: “I don’t agree with this accusation. Our team is 11, it doesn’t matter if it’s local or foreign, right? We all have to be together to understand how to win. Local vs. foreign players – we never thought like this. Bangladesh can’t win like this. We always have to be together.”
