BNP Defends Political Appointments in Universities
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that it is natural for a political government to appoint some individuals with political affiliation, including in positions like vice-chancellors at public universities. He made these remarks on Wednesday night (18 March) while speaking to journalists at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
Responding to questions about controversy over appointing party-aligned VCs, Mirza Fakhrul said:
“সমালোচনা তো থাকবেই। এখন পলিটিক্যাল গভর্নমেন্ট তার নিজস্ব পলিটিক্যাল দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিতে নিয়োগগুলো হবে….এটা তো এমন না যে মুহূর্তের মধ্যে সমস্ত ফেরেশতা নিয়ে আনা হবে।”
Translation: Criticism will always exist. A political government will make appointments based on its own political views… it is not possible to suddenly bring angels to fill all positions.

‘Some Party People Will Naturally Be There’
Mirza Fakhrul further said:
“দ্য বেস্ট পসিবল যাদেরকে মনে হয়েছে, তাকে দেওয়া হয়েছে। যেহেতু দলীয় সরকার দলীয় সরকার কিছুটা দলীয় লোক তো থাকবেই…, এটাকে আপনার সমালোচনা হতে পারে… আমরা সমালোচনা হবে না তা বলছি না। কিন্তু এটা নিয়ে আমরা খুব একটা উদ্বিগ্ন নই।”
Translation: Those considered the best possible candidates have been given the positions. Since it is a party government, naturally some party people will be there… this can be criticised, and we are not saying there will be no criticism, but we are not very worried about it.
Claims Appointed VCs Are Qualified
Mirza Fakhrul also said that those appointed are experienced and capable:
“ইউনিভার্সিটি ভাইস চ্যান্সেল যারা পরীক্ষিত লোক, তারা একাডেমিকালি অত্যন্ত যোগ্য, প্রশাসনিক দিক দিয়ে যোগ্য… কোনদিক থেকে আমি তো অসুবিধা দেখি না।”
Translation: The university vice-chancellors are tested individuals; they are academically very qualified and administratively capable… I do not see any problem from any side.
BNP National Council to Be Held This Year
Mirza Fakhrul also confirmed that BNP’s national council will be held within this year, although the exact date has not been fixed yet.
He said:
“বিএনপির কাউন্সিল এই বছরের মধ্যেই। তবে এখনো আমরা সময় নির্ধারণ করেনি। কিন্তু আমার মনে হয় শিগগিরই হবে কাউন্সিল।”
Translation: BNP’s council will be held within this year. We have not fixed the date yet, but I think it will be held soon.
The last national council of BNP was held in 2016.
Party Activities Slowed as Leaders Joined Government
Responding to a question about party activities after forming the government, he said that many party leaders are now busy with government responsibilities, which has slowed some organizational work. Most party members have joined the government. It will take time to fill those gaps… the government will do its work, and the party will do its work.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir defended the appointment of vice-chancellors by saying that political considerations are unavoidable in a political government. At the same time, he assured that BNP’s organizational activities and national council preparations are ongoing and will be completed within the year.
