Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly and Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that although the constitution is currently being invoked in the country in words, the reality is different. He mentioned that there was no mention in the constitution of elections in 2026 or that one party would be the government and another party would be the main opposition.
According to him, these changes were possible as a result of the July Uprising. He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the Eid reunion program organized by Sylhet Metropolitan Jamaat on Sunday (March 22) afternoon.
Relationship between the Constitution and the People
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said,
মনে রাখতে হবে, সংবিধানের জন্য জনগণ নয়, বরং জনগণের জন্যই সংবিধান। গণঅভ্যুত্থানের প্রত্যাশা পূরণে জুলাই সনদ বাস্তবায়নের কোনো বিকল্প নেই।
Translation: It must be remembered that the constitution is not for the people, but for the people. There is no alternative to implementing the July Charter to fulfill the expectations of the mass uprising.
The country’s potential and leadership crisis
In reference to the country’s resources, he said,
‘আমাদের দেশে অনেক সম্পদ রয়েছে। শুধু চরিত্রগত সম্পদের অভাবে প্রত্যাশিত বাংলাদেশ পাচ্ছি না। অথচ দেশের সন্তানেরা পুরো বিশ্বে মেধার স্বাক্ষর রেখে চলেছেন। আমরা মেধাবীদের জাতির নেতৃত্বে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে চাই।’
Translation: ‘Our country has many resources. We are not getting the expected Bangladesh only due to lack of character resources. However, the children of the country are leaving their mark of talent all over the world. We want to establish talented people as the leaders of the nation.’
Addressing the BNP, the Jamaat Amir said,
“গণঅভ্যুত্থান-পরবর্তী সময়ে আমার বন্ধুপ্রতিম রাজনৈতিক দলের নেতৃবৃন্দ বলতেন, ‘নির্বাচিত সরকার ছাড়া দেশে স্থিতিশীলতা প্রতিষ্ঠা সম্ভব নয়।’ নির্বাচন হলো এবং রাজনৈতিক দল সরকার গঠন করলেও প্রত্যাশিত স্থিতিশীলতার দেখা মিলেনি। সমাজ থেকে অনিয়ম, বিশৃঙ্খলা ও প্রতিহিংসা দূর হয়নি।”
Translation: “In the post-people’s uprising, the leaders of my friendly political parties used to say, ‘It is not possible to establish stability in the country without an elected government.’ Elections were held and political parties formed the government, but the expected stability was not seen. Irregularities, chaos and revenge have not been eliminated from the society.”
Strongly criticizing the government, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said,
‘নির্বাচিত সরকারের আমলে মব সৃষ্টি করে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের গভর্নরকে বিদায় নিতে হয়েছে। প্রথমবারের মতো দলীয় বিবেচনায় গার্মেন্টস ব্যবসায়ীকে গভর্নরের পদে বসানো হয়েছে। দেড় বছর কৃতিত্বের সঙ্গে দায়িত্ব পালনকারী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভিসি-প্রোভিসিদের বিদায় করতে বাধ্য করে সেই পদে দলীয় বিবেচনায় নিয়োগদান জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থানের প্রত্যাশার পরিপন্থি। ঈদযাত্রায় অতিরিক্ত ভাড়া আদায় ও চরম অব্যবস্থাপনা দেখে জাতি হতাশ হয়েছে।’
Translation: ‘During the elected government, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank had to leave due to creating a mob. For the first time, a garment businessman has been appointed to the post of Governor based on party considerations. Forcing the VCs and Pro-VCs of universities who have been serving their duties with distinction for one and a half years to leave and appointing them to that post based on party considerations is contrary to the expectations of the July people’s uprising. The nation is disappointed by the excessive fare collection and extreme mismanagement during the Eid pilgrimage.’

The opposition leader said,
‘সরকারি দলকে মনে রাখতে হবে, দীর্ঘ ১৫ বছর আমাদের সঙ্গে আপনারাও মজলুম ছিলেন। সংস্কার প্রস্তাব এড়িয়ে যাওয়ার ষড়যন্ত্র থেকে বিরত থাকার আহ্বান জানাচ্ছি। আমরা বিরোধী দল হিসেবে দায়িত্বশীল ভূমিকা পালন করব। জনগণের প্রত্যাশা পূরণকে আমরা সর্বোচ্চ অগ্রাধিকার দেব। নির্বাচনি ফলাফল আমরা মেনে নিয়েছি— এর অর্থ এই নয় যে, নির্বাচন সুষ্ঠু হয়েছে। ইতোমধ্যে নির্বাচন ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিংয়ের বিষয়টি জাতির সামনে তুলে ধরা হয়েছে।’
Translation: ‘The ruling party should remember that you were also oppressed with us for 15 long years. We urge you to refrain from conspiring to avoid the reform proposal. We will play a responsible role as the opposition party. We will give top priority to fulfilling the expectations of the people. We have accepted the election results – this does not mean that the election was fair. The issue of election engineering has already been brought to the attention of the nation.’
He said,
অনেকেই ফ্যাসিবাদবিরোধী আন্দোলনের দোহাই দিয়ে উদোর পিণ্ডি বুধোর ঘাড়ে চাপাতে চান। অথচ ফ্যাসিবাদবিরোধী আন্দোলনের কারণে আমাদের দলকে নিষিদ্ধ করা হয়েছে। নিবন্ধন ও প্রতীক কেড়ে নেওয়া হয়েছে। একের পর এক শীর্ষ নেতৃবৃন্দকে ফাঁসি দেওয়া হয়েছে। কিন্তু আমরা কোনো শক্তির সঙ্গে আপস করিনি। মাথা উঁচু করে রাজনীতি করেছি। আমাদের এই পথ অব্যাহত থাকবে ইনশাআল্লাহ।
Translation: Many people want to blame the government on the pretext of the anti-fascist movement. However, our party has been banned due to the anti-fascist movement. Its registration and symbol have been taken away. One after another, top leaders have been hanged. But we did not compromise with any force. We did politics with our heads held high. We will continue on this path, InshaAllah.
The Jamaat Ameer said,
‘ফ্যাসিবাদের রাজনীতি এই দেশে আর চলবে না। কারণ জনগণ পরিবর্তন চায় বলেই গণভোটে রায় দিয়েছে। সেই রায় বাস্তবায়ন করতেই হবে। আমাদের হতাশ হওয়া চলবে না। কারণ মানবিক বাংলাদেশ বিনির্মাণে আমাদের পথচলা থামবে না। এবার হয়নি, আল্লাহ চাইলে পরবর্তীতে জনতার বিজয় হবে। সেই লক্ষ্যে আমাদের কাজ চালিয়ে যেতে হবে।’
Translation: ‘The politics of fascism will not continue in this country anymore. Because the people voted in the referendum because they want change. That vote must be implemented. We must not be disappointed. Because our path to building a humane Bangladesh will not stop. It did not happen this time, God willing, the people will win later. We must continue to work towards that goal.
