At a function organized on the occasion of the great Independence and National Day, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku expressed deep concern over theft and moral degradation in the energy sector. He said that theft is not being stopped even after guarding petrol pumps and depots, which is a big challenge for the country.
Background of the event
He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the reception ceremony for the brave freedom fighters organized by the Sirajganj District Administration on Thursday (March 26) afternoon. The function was held at the Sirajganj District Shilpakala Academy.
The event was presided over by District Administrator Md. Aminul Islam and was attended by Superintendent of Police Md. Saiful Islam Santu and freedom fighter Azizur Rahman Dulal as special guests. In addition, freedom fighters from different parts of the district participated in the event.
Minister’s statement on fuel theft
In his speech, the Minister said,
আমাকে পেট্রল পাম্প এবং পেট্রল ডিপো পাহারা দেওয়া লাগে যাতে চুরি না হয়। তারপরও চুরি হচ্ছে, কারণ মানুষের নৈতিক চরিত্র খারাপ হয়ে গেছে।
Translation: I have to guard petrol pumps and petrol depots to prevent theft. Still, theft happens because people’s moral character has deteriorated.
In the meeting held at the Sirajganj District Shilpakala Academy, the minister highlighted the current energy situation and said,
‘আমি তেল ঠিকই দিচ্ছি। আগে যে পরিমাণ তেল বিক্রি করতে পেট্রল পাম্পগুলোর এক থেকে দেড় দিন সময় লাগত, এখন সেই তেল দুই ঘণ্টায় শেষ হয়ে যায়। এই তেল আসলে কোথায় যায়? আমাদের পুলিশ সুপার গতকালই মাটির নিচ থেকে চুরি করা তেল উদ্ধার করেছেন।’
Translation: “I am providing oil properly. Earlier, the amount of oil that used to take petrol pumps one to one and a half days to sell, now that oil runs out in two hours. Where does this oil actually go? Our police superintendent recovered the stolen oil from under the ground yesterday.”

Calling on the brave freedom fighters to take to the field as independent guards to prevent fuel shortages and theft, the minister said,
‘শুধু বুকে অতন্ত্র প্রহরী লিখে রাখলে চলবে না, আপনাদের কাজেও তা প্রমাণ করতে হবে। প্রত্যেক মুক্তিযোদ্ধার দায়িত্ব এখন রাস্তায় নামা। আমরা রক্ত দিয়ে দেশ স্বাধীন করেছি, পতাকা ও শাসনতন্ত্র এনেছি; সেই অর্জনকে রক্ষা করতে হবে।’
Translation: “It is not enough to just write independent guards on your chest, you have to prove it in your work as well. The responsibility of every freedom fighter is now to take to the streets. We liberated the country with our blood, brought a flag and a constitution; we have to protect that achievement.”
Comment on the religious state
Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, strongly criticizing the religion-based state, said,
‘আমরা একটি ধর্মভিত্তিক রাষ্ট্রের বিরুদ্ধে দাঁড়িয়েছিলাম। ধর্ম দিয়ে যে রাষ্ট্র হয় না, তার বড় উদাহরণ আজকের পাকিস্তান। পাকিস্তান ধর্ম দিয়ে লড়াই করতে করতে আজ কোথায় গিয়ে ঠেকেছে, তা সবাই জানে। জিয়াউর রহমান সেদিন যদি দিশা না দেখাতেন, তবে হতাশ বাঙালি জাতির পক্ষে এই পতাকা ও মানচিত্র পাওয়া খুব কঠিন হতো।’
Translation: “We stood against a religion-based state. Today’s Pakistan is a great example of the fact that a state cannot be built on religion. Everyone knows where Pakistan has ended up today by fighting on religion. If Ziaur Rahman had not shown the way that day, it would have been very difficult for the frustrated Bengali nation to get this flag and map.”
