A new debate has started in Bangladesh about who should go to parliament and who should become Members of Parliament (MPs). The discussion began after the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) nominated a rickshaw-puller who became a symbol of the July uprising.
One of his rival candidates said that elitism must end, and he feels honoured to compete against a rickshaw-puller. However, some others questioned whether a rickshaw-puller has the qualifications to become a lawmaker.

In another constituency, a candidate from Debidwar mentioned his family background as a qualification. In response, another candidate from the same seat said that these attitudes are “unacceptable obstacles” and that this is exactly why the July revolution happened.
Bangladesh’s Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan recently shared his own opinion on Facebook.
Fouzul Kabir Khan wrote:
“আমি ব্যক্তিগতভাবে সংসদে সকল শ্রেণী ও পেশার প্রতিনিধিত্ব চাই। কেবল ব্যবসায়ী অধ্যুষিত সংসদের করুন পরিণতি আমরা দেখেছি।
আসুক পরিবর্তনের হাওয়া, গড়ে উঠুক নতুন আবাদ।”Translation:
“Personally, I want representation from all classes and professions in parliament. We have seen the tragic outcome of a parliament dominated only by businessmen. Let the wind of change come, let a new beginning grow.”
