MP Speaks at Urs Ceremony in Brahmanbaria
Barrister Rumeen Farhana, Member of Parliament for Brahmanbaria-2 (Sarail–Ashuganj), made these remarks while inaugurating the 58th death anniversary and annual Urs of spiritual leader Abdul Qadir Shah (RA). The event was held on Thursday night (March 26) at Sharifpur Union in Ashuganj Upazila.
Strong Criticism of Attacks on Shrines and Cultural Events
At the beginning of her speech, Rumin Farhana strongly criticized recent incidents where shrines were attacked and Baul music programmes were obstructed. She said,
“গত ১৮ মাস অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন সরকারের সময়ে আমরা দেখেছি, কীভাবে একটার পর একটা মাজার ভাঙা হয়েছে, বাউল গানের আসরে বাধা দেওয়া হয়েছে। বাউল গান যারা করে, তাদের হেনস্তা করে জেলে দেওয়া হয়েছে আমরা এগুলো দেখেছি।”
Translation: “During the last 18 months under the interim government, we have seen how one shrine after another was demolished and Baul music gatherings were obstructed. We have seen Baul singers being harassed and even jailed.”
She added that she protested every such incident and spoke out repeatedly against the destruction of shrines.

Announcement on Religious and Cultural Programmes
The MP made it clear that all forms of religious and cultural events would be allowed equally in her constituency. She expressed,
“আমি স্পষ্টভাবে বলতে চাই, আমি যতদিন এই এলাকার দায়িত্বে থাকব, আমার এলাকায় ওয়াজ যেমন হবে, কীর্তন যেমন হবে, বাউল গানও হবে।”
Translation: “I want to state clearly that as long as I am responsible for this area, there will be waz as well as kirtan and Baul songs in my constituency.”
Commitment to Protect Cultural Heritage
Rumeen Farhana emphasized that preserving Bangladesh’s cultural traditions is a shared responsibility and that these traditions must be passed on to future generations. She noted that Baul music and shrines are an important part of Bangladesh’s cultural identity.
